A collection for Harry & Mary from Harry's News

Postby jonathan @ hamptons » Tue Apr 14, 2015 9:27 am

As Chair of the Business Network I have received many comments this week about the closing of Harry's News. As many of you know, Harry & Mary have been serving the local community for as long as I can remember and have been battling a rent rise for the last year or so. Unfortunately they lost the battle and as many of you will have seen, have now closed for the last time.

Whilst it's not our place to single out individuals, it does seem that as a community it would be a kind and thoughtful thing to have a collection in order to give them a happy send off - they have worked for seven days a week from goodness knows what time every morning until late into the night with not even as much as a grumble. If anyone would like to make a donation, large or small, cash or simple gift, please do drop something into Hamptons by close of play on St George's day (Thursday 23rd April). We will make sure that everything gets to them by next Friday which I understand is their last day in London.

Do also feel free to comment on this post to keep it up the rankings!!!

Many thanks,

Jonathan

Oh no that's such a shame. They're such a lovely couple and Northcote Road will be a poorer place without them. It's such a shame that the very people who made Northcote Road what it is have become victims of their own success.

Just to mention that the collection for Harry & Mary will close tomorrow. So far we have had a 'reasonable' amount of interest but could certainly do with a few extra donations if at all possible so do feel free to dig deep if you can.

Many thanks in advance,

Jonathan

Good morning everyone,

I spoke to Harry yesterday to find out when he's leaving Northcote Road and he said that he actually hands the keys back next Friday not this Friday. With that in mind (and also the fact that we could really do with a bit more of a collection if possible), I thought it would be a good idea to extend the collection to next Friday morning. I have asked Harry if he could pop into my office at midday as I have 'a small token' of appreciation for him so if everyone would also like to come and see them off at the same time I think it would mean a lot to them.

So, one more week to donate and then a big send off at Hamptons next Friday (the 1st) at midday.

Many thanks,

Jonathan

Great idea to thank Harry and Mary, both wonderful people who have worked so incredibly hard over the 20 years or so that we've lived here. What a shame that they have had to move on - it was such a sad day when their shop shut for the last time. They were always so welcoming and smiling. Our family will definitely donate something so I will pop in before May 1st. Many thanks for organising, Jonathan.
