What good state/grammars are accessible from SW11?

Postby ouided01 » Fri Apr 24, 2015 1:57 pm

Could anyone please recommend good girls or mixed state schools ( including grammars ) accessible from Wandsworth/Clapham junction area? I pretty much know the independents ( Alleyns, JAGs, putney/wimbledon high, Emanuel ), and the local state such as Graveney, Bolingbroke ( good feedback but no results yet, so unsure ). Grammars: Tiffins no way as SW11 isn't in their catchment area, Henrietta Barnet: insane commute, Wallington/Nonsuch: may be. Tonbridge: also an insane commute.
Am I missing any good state schools that are accessible from our local area?

Thank you

Do you mean Tonbridge Grammar? Yes, I think to put it politely you're unlikely to have a hope!! There are about 3 million kids (OK, I exaggerate ever so slightly) bussing and training from only Sevenoaks to Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells every day (have been for eons), so I'm certain all the Grammars there will be hopelessly oversubscribed.

St Cecilia's in Southfields might be worth a look, too? A friend recommends it.

I don't debate the difficulty of getting in based on 11+ results and over-subscription of these schools. It's indeed tough to get a place.

I am more interested in knowing about good schools that are within a sane commute distance for an 11-y old child from SW11, and grammars that have no catchment areas. Tiffin Girls for example have a designated post-code area.
Henrietta Barnet doesn't. I am not sure about Sutton grammars, but even if they didn't, are they easily reachable from SW11?

Putting a child through a long school journey is definitely undesirable. One could argue though, once you actually get a place, you could move house afterwards.

Will you consider CofE schools?
