We should get them to roll this out borough-wide:

Urm, no thanks! I pick up after my dog. Don't tar all dog owners with the same brush.

I'd be happy if they just followed the signs. There are clear "No dogs" signs at Clapham Common where the area by the Bowling Green Cafe is a designated play area. Still dog owners just ignore them, and carry on because their dog clearly doesn't mess, wouldn't never pose a threat to an infant, because it's so inconvenient and they're so important.

As a dog owner I know that the vast majority of dogs' mess is cleaned up at the time by the dog's owner & if you need proof try opening one of the red bins in the park on a hot, sunny day!

In reality if a dog owner leaves his **** behind then the other dog owners are very vocal in telling them to go back and pick it up. Obviously there are some who are inconsiderate but their actions are just as likely to end up on the bottom on my shoe as it is on yours.

However if you're keen on taking your turd-hunt up a notch can you have a word with the foxes at the same time. They come over here, rumaging in our bins, eating our left-over food then go out into the streets and crap everywhere. They never pick up after themselves & it always looks suspiciously like dog **** ;)

I have a message for the dog owner that lobs his/her little bag of dog sh*t over the fence and into my front garden - in future I will leave the gate open so feel free to walk on in and throw it in the bin properly.

We have a dilemma around the corner in Dundonald Road, Wimbledon. There is a blind gentleman who commutes to and from work with his golden labrador guide dog. It does its business on the pavements along that stretch almost every morning at the height of rush hour and school runs (two nurseries and one primary school). My husband and I watched it happen yesterday en route to church. Poor chap is unaware of where or when it happens, and dog generally just poops whilst walking, and he can't see to pick it up.

I have the Merton Council Love Clean Streets App, so I simply use that to photo locate it and alert them. They usually are pretty quick and it's gone within 24 hours.

Dog-owner and parent here who once upon a time had neither a dog nor a child and was as irritated as anyone when stepping in dog poo or jangled by a wailing child.

Today I am older and, if not wiser, more tolerant. In London most people while in public do their best to respect others with their charges on two legs, four, or four wheels. Ours is a civil city which rubs along in a spirit of give and take, of exercising as much tolerance for others as we would expect for ourselves.

I note from their messages that both Petal and BBMum sound as if English is their second language so may be bringing the assumptions and customs of their home cultures to bear on London, the city in which I was born, brought up and continue to live. Here in London, we do not believe in collective punishment, nor in a police state (which has to be paid for out of taxes) in which there are multitudes of officers on the street to witness, video as proof and spot-fine dog-poo offenders. Should that be the kind of city you wish to live in, Singapore sounds your best bet.

Hi Petal. I am not suggesting you have no right or only a second-class right to be a London citizen. I ventured only that your written English suggested to me that it might be your second language and therefore you may not have the nuanced understanding of the customs and spirit of someone like me, born here and resident for over 50 years.

I wouldn't dream of voting UKIP by the way.

But I agree with you about CCTV cameras, except that many don't work and only in rare circumstances will the police spare the manpower to review the videos in the search for evidence. Should those circumstances come to include looking for dog-poo offenders, then we really are on a slippery slope. As it were.

Don't the posts reflect a "call for action"? In that, requesting a minority of dog owners to be less selfish and take notice of the environment rather than ignore it, because it doesn't suit their own purpose?

Petal, I made a suggestion, not a statement. Your English seemed to me striving to be idiomatic without being native. Maybe I am wrong and you are the Pearly Queen to my Pearly King and we can do the Lambeth Walk together. But, even as a dog-owner, I am not going to clean another dog's poo off your pram wheels. Not even tongue in cheek. Or tongue and cheek, if you prefer.

Me too! If NappyValleyNet were a screwball comedy, we'd be getting a room by now… ;)
