Moving to New York...help !

Postby adra » Sun May 17, 2015 10:34 pm

Hi,

Calling all American mums or anyone who has lived in the US....I am moving to New York shortly with a 2.5 year old and a bump due in early Sept. And we will be living in the Upper West Side.

Really wondered if anyone could recommend any pregnancy groups ( Is there an NCT equivalent ??) or Mum's classes/ meet ups ? Would love to get to know some other mums and maybe some playdates for my daughter !

Any other advice on moving from Clapham to New York with kids would be fab !!

Hi - I just moved from NYC to Clapham and am sorry to say there is no NCT equivalent. There is an UES Facebook mom's group that you can request to join. and there are baby / toddler classes at the 91st St Y, and other places if you google it. They would be at a higher price than NCT of course as they are for profit.

I can recommend having the baby at NYU hospital - they are great for delivery and should offer some classes if you want. You will find that in the US, they provide more care for prenatal visits (referred to here as antinatal), but real care / help/ services for post delivery.
I would also suggsest looking into preschools early for your 2.5 year old. they fill up

NYC is a great city and the UES has a ton of families like you - enjoy!

I notice you are moving to the Upper West Side - it's also great for families and has it's own Facebok page: https://www.facebook.com/upperwestsideMoms

There's a UWS YMCA that many families I know use regularly, has classes and a pool etc.

If you have a relocation firm make sure to ask them about preschools as agree with the other poster that they fill up quickly.

UWS hospitals are good no need to go downtown. You'll have a private room and good postnatal care.

Good luck!
