1 year old not crawling etc

Postby Happymummy2014 » Fri Jun 12, 2015 3:41 pm

My younger child isn't weight bearing, crawling or self feeding (literally will not hold bottle or put anything near mouth except thumb when teething) at the age of 1. But otherwise v happy baby who eats, plays, babbles etc in the usual way. Am not seriously worried, as there's nothing physically wrong, and I figure most babies will get round to it at some point. Have others had this, and at what point did their little one/s catch up?

My friend's first born never crawled, was not bothered to hold her bottle nor eat by herself until she was at least two and started walking at 22 months. We always laugh that she was talking before she started walking.
Her second did pretty much the same thing. I remember at 15 months she was still not standing nor crawling etc and walked around 20 months. Perfectly healthy children, just were a bit slower on the physical side.
However if you are worried maybe best talk to your GP.

Thank you both! Good to know other babies are just as lazy/laid-back! I think I will talk to HV if no change soon, just for reassurance. In a few weeks I will probably be chasing both kids round the house, longing for the day when one of them stayed still...

Hi

My son wasn't moving at all at age 1 and didn't weight bear either. Though his fine motor skills were normal and he did hold his bottle/self feed. He started bottom shuffling at a bit after 1 but never crawled or cruised. Then at 22 months he just got up and walked.
I took him to see my GP when he was around 1 and who wasn't concerned but referred him to one of the community pediatricians working out of St Georges (though I saw her at a small clinic in Tooting) just to be on the safe side. She was great and didn't think there was a problem but continued to monitor him until he was eventually walking. This massively put my mind at rest so pleased I did it.
Now at age 4 he is totally normal. Runs around and climbs climbing frames just like all the others! So don't worry.
Good Luck

My middle child didn't bear weight until she was around 18 months, very reluctantly started crawling around then too. She could walk at 22 months but aside from her first attempt, refused until she was 2. She could count to 20 before she could stand up

The worst thing was she weighed an absolute tonne and I was pregnant and was still lugging her around until baby was 6 months

She's 3 1/2 now and I'd say her gross motor skills are on the slow side of normal, she's just mastered stairs independently, though that's more confidence than ability. I doubt she'll ever be a physical or sporty type, more of a sensitive thinker, she's almost taught herself to read. We encourage the physical side with ballet, playball and forest school which she loves. Really don't worry, they've all got their own 'thing' and do things their own way. I often think our 'encouragement' just distracts them from their own path.

Gosh you are all so kind. Thank you so much for the reassurance. I definitely think she will talk before she moves, so maybe that is her thing!

Hello I had a similar experience. My oldest only walked at 19 months. When she started to walk, she was then very confident and never fell as if she had practiced in her mind and watched all the others before and got up when she was 300% ready. She was bottom shuffling and it is said that it may delay walking as the child has less incentive to stand since they're almost already in an upright position.

As for my second, she only started to hold her bottle/beaker at 13 months. It was clear it was laziness until then as we knew she could do it.
She would not crawl until 13 months either. Before, she loved being on her tummy but would not crawl. She would just be like a seal without lifting her bottom at all. I took her to the chiropractor. In a few sessions, she finally understood she could "connect with" her bottom and started to crawl. She is much more flexible and aware of her body now.

And then when they start to be on the move it's non-stop and you bless these days where they would stay still ;-))))

I just wanted to thank (again) everyone who posted encouraging replies etc, and give you a short update (for anyone else in the same boat).
We did manage to get a referral for occupational therapy - thus giving me a giggle. I thought OT was to train office workers to lift boxes, but was told "there is OT for every kind of occupation, including the occupation of being a baby". Love it !
The only bad news is that the waiting list is 18 weeks. So we'll be lucky to be seen by Christmas and I have been a bit worried about my daughter missing so much time doing the things she should be doing.
However, she has just had, aged 15 mo, an astonishing 2 weeks in which she taught herself to pick up a sippy cup, crawl, and finally to hold bits of food near her mouth ! I'm keeping her on the list for OT (for now), as she still can't sit up, and has a way to go on self feeding, but I am in awe of her for suddenly learning so much so quickly ! (Will give up the OT appointment if she carries on learning as don't want to use up resources that others need more.)
Anyway - thank you all for words of wisdom and support - and anyone else in this position, hopefully your little ones will work it all out, even if a bit slowly, just as mine seems to be doing.
