Au Pair Babysitting Rates

Postby MrsDaisy » Sat Jun 27, 2015 7:43 pm

Hi All!!

I have a lovely new Au Pair who has been with us for about 6 weeks now and she has just informed me that her Au Pair friends are earning £10/hour for extra babysitting (which is more than i was prepared to pay) - so I thought I would just put it out there to find out how much you all pay your Au Pairs for babysitting, and what do you think is a fair rate?

My friend paid £4 to £6 to her au pair. We usually paid her £6 to £7

We use fully qualified nannys to babysit and pay £8 to £8.50 when the kids are in bed. So £10 sounds ridiculous.

Most qualified nannys charge £10ph. That is pretty normal. X

£10/hr sounds a great rate for a nanny, but a bit toppish for a night's babysitting! We pay our au pair what we would pay someone through a service like sitters.co.uk, so around £7/hr.

The kids may be asleep when babysitting but nannies are still very much responsible if anything goes wrong. And travel costs need to be taken into account also. I'm sure it's different for a live in nanny as to a live out nanny. Each to their own :)

I never pay more than £7ph for evening babysitting as this is what Sitters the agency charge.

The fully qualified nannies who babysit for us charge between £10 and £12 per hour for evening babysitting. I would say for an au pair £7.50 would be more reasonable...

All my friends pay £7ph and my au pair says that is what her friends are paid too. I would not expect to pay an au pair the same as a qualified/experienced nanny anyway.

As an Au Pair - recently turned qualified Nanny, I would expect £10ph but depending on terms of contract/agreement as an au pair, I would expect £8ph if babysitting was not clarified at least 2 days in advance. Usually I would do 1 babysit for free during the weekdays. All I would say is. if you go out regularly of a weekend and you have an au pair, be respective of the fact that they also have a social life. If you are going to ask for their time over and above the hours they do during the week, it is only fair to pay them reapectably. As I said, £7-8ph for babysitting is enough for an au pair for extra babysitting.

the job pays what it pays.

whether someone 'expects' £10 per hour or not, its about what you are prepared to pay. I

sitters.com might be your friend here.

Most au pair contacts INCLUDE two nights babysitting during the week, so this should not be extra. Times should be agreed of course. For weekend babysitting, your au pair should not cost you more than an agency like sitters and £7 is very reasonable. Clearly, you will need to agree the times in advance with your au pair so that she/he can also organise their social life, but my experience is that they are generally keen to do the extra babysitting and sometimes go out when we get back!
