Hi Onlyme,
There was a Tinnitus helpline, that were quite good on giving advice and support, sorry I couldn't find the details. When it first came on for me, it drove me crazy and I don't think anyone understood the severity.
You do get used to it and I can usually tune it out now (it did take a couple of months). However at the beginning, when I was stressed or had nothing to occupy myself with, that is when I focused on the tinnitus and the awful sound entirely.
A visit to my doctor was no good, they were really sympathetic, though there was little they could do. If it is really bad, I think there are some local support and counselling groups in some areas or a hearing aid providing white noise which may create some relief.
In my case, it was a wake up call to stay active and not to stress out and I have gotten used to it now. It did take sometime, but now it has little impact. Hopefully, this will be a similar experience for your friend and thank you for being so considerate and kind in looking out for them.
