Postby NYE31 » Tue Jul 28, 2015 5:23 pm

Our DS who has just turned 4, will be starting tennis lessons in Sept when he starts Reception at Pre Prep, can anyone recommend a tennis racket for him?

@juliantenniscoach, your advice would be particularly appreciated.

Thanks v.much in advance :)

Hi
I'd go down to Capsticks and ask them to measure him for the right size.

At that age a racket that's too heavy can make playing all but impossible and I remember mine had some incredibly small rackets with very short handles but still proper heads when they were young.

We've always bought Babolat and they've been great.

Just stay away from Sports Direct :-)

Hi NYE31

We would love to be able to help you. If you pop along to our tennis venue in Wandsworth Common (just behind Skylark Cafe) one of our coaching team would be able to advise on the best racket for your son.

We also have a selection of rackets that we loan out to junior players (from age 3+) on courses or whilst hiring a court. We'd be more than happy to let him try some out.

You may also be interested in coming along to one of our Tennis Camps over the Summer. We've just added another session for the age group 3-4 at Wandsworth Common.

Do visit and our coaching team can help you choose the right racket for your son.

Hi
Sorry I missed this post first time round. Ok do you need a racket? Most places (inc me) have them to lend at that age because the child mind not like it (horror of horrors) or grow out very quickly anyway.

Depending on height it would be 19" or possibly 21". There are much of a muchness to be honest, aluminium framed. Most kids chose depending on the colour.

Pass by the courts next week from Tuesday and I'll show you what I have and I also sell them at discount. Not sure I can beat the price of the all consuming of small retailers monster that is sports direct.

Hope this helps.

Thanks v.much everyone, he's 1m tall & does need a racket of his own.

Based on 1m, would he need 19" or 21"?

:)

Hi NYE31,

Some great advice already. Finding the size and grip shouldn't be too much of a problem. Just be a bit conscious of the weight and any strain it may put on the wrist and shoulder. However, most clubs/coaches will will be mindful of this anyway. Good luck x
