We're looking to buy a 3-4 bed house in Nappy Valley - anywhere from Earlsfield, Wandsworth, Battersea to Balham near a good school. Can anyone recommend a good estate agent?

The best thing to do is register with them all, you can do this easily through a platform like Rightmove .... If you have the time it's good to pop in and meet the agents as the good properties often sell before they are online.

It's often the agent you think won't find you your dream property will have it - as we found out.

Savills & Cound deal with very different housing markets, I would register with all the agents via rightmove etc

Hope you've having some joy registering with the local agents. It's worth calling them up too and explaining your own situation rather than relying on them to remember you when the perfect house comes up.
If you're looking for more help with your purchase you might want to consider using a buying agent. They act on the buyers behalf sourcing property and negotiating for you. They offer a brilliant service particularly if it's an area you don't know really well. There are lots operating in London. One that I have particular experience with is Sam at Edingtons. He's a great guy, lives locally but deals in property all over London and at all budgets. I would echo the post by LP73 and say that the best thing you can do is register with the two main portals - Rightmove and Zoopla initially and see what comes through. I really wouldn't narrow down your search by only looking to buy through particular agents as in reality your dream home could be on with anyone from a large corporate to a small independent. I would also try to see everything, as many buyers seem to over anlalyse what's on offer and find reasons not to buy a place rather than physically seeing as many places as possible. If I think back to times before the internet, most buyers bought the one place they never thought they would buy purely because they went to see it and fell in love with it. Remember that everyone compromises when they come to buy, however unless you actually go and view you'll never know whether the compromise is one you feel happy to make.

At this time of the year I often hear buyers talking about 'waiting until September when there will be more stock to choose from' whereas in reality there is no great bundle of properties waiting in the wings to hit the market. Of course once you've found your prince, a good agent will make sure that the transaction stays on track and manages you and the seller effectively, but initially you just need to get out there and kiss a load of frogs...!!!
