URGENT: need a paeds dentist for a tooth extraction for 3 yo Post Reply

My son has unfortunately got a tooth that needs extraction. We managed to extract one tooth under local anaesthetic, but unfortunately he remembers the procedure and is reluctant to let our brilliant dentist in Morden repeat the procedure. The only way is to remove under a general anaesthetic, which she does not perform.
The NHS route is taking ages, and he is in pain every day and it breaks my heart to keep dosing him on regular painkillers.
We urgently need recommendations for dentists who can remove teeth under General Anaesthetic privately. Anywhere in South West London/ Central London.

they might be associated with a private hospital to do the general anaesthetic extraction. The dentist, I mean, not the dental surgery.

Give Glow a call, 020 7223 7096, they've been very good on more general stuff but they're really friendly so even though I suspect they won't be able to help they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

My son had a scooting accident at 3yrs. His scooter hit some uneven pavement and came to a halt, smashing his front tooth up and back into his gum.
The dentist on Webbs Road admitted they didn't know what best to do and sent us to dental A&E at Kings College Hosp (the dental school in Camberwell)
They were amazing. X-rated straight away. Seen straight away. They then weighed him, gave him a sweet drink which contained the perfect does of Midazolam (a sedative) We played with some toys in this padded area and as he started to flop they helped me get him onto the chair (on my lap) and they whipped his tooth out in seconds. He only had great memories of that day. He was like a happy drunk coming home in the cab and went to bed giggling. Maybe see if you can get an appointment there? Awful for children to have a fear of dentists. Good for you for trying to avoid it.
In the meantime, everyone should know that just like you go straight to Moorfields A&E for anything to do with eyes, go straight to Kings A&E for all accidents involving teeth. Good luck. xx

There is a dental surgeon at Parkside, who does consultations at Parkside but seems to operate at Lister. Can't remember his name, but he was good some five years back and once I had the initial appointment he operated very quickly

Try Toothbeary in Richmond. It's a children's dentist. We took our daughter there when our usual dentist suggested root canal.

My son had a crown fitted and fisher seals on his teeth recently at Toothberry in Richmond and they were excellent. A very professional relaxed and calm setting and the staff completely accommodating and patient. My son has a complete phobia of the dentist so everything is an issue for him, even being weighed on the scales for the anaesthetist was traumatic but they kept calm and let me be involved throughout to help ease the situation. Procedures involving an anaesthetist only take place on a Thursday and all the children are kept separate so no risk of one child traumatising another with their screaming.

Highly recommend the practice and staff. Not the cheapest but worth every penny.

GA should only be done in a hospital setting according to new guidelines from BDA and NICE. I have been to Toothbeary before, and yes their setup is quite nice, but we felt rushed through our appointment and felt it was more dentist led, rather than patient (or parent led).

Oh I'm so sorry your little one had a tooth out, but the way they handled it at King's sounds amazing!
unfortunately, it's a non urgent tooth extraction, so I doubt they will remove it in A&E, and will probably refer me thru pathway for non urgent tooth extraction - which would be own dentist refer to own area paeds tooth extraction team.

I've looked at a lot of avenues and really don't know what to do at present.

my daughter was in a similar situation a few years ago. She had been referred to Guys hospital, but was in agony, so I went to the emergency dept one morning and they booked us in a couple of days later. Would recommend you call them first as it was some years ago. And not very luxurious surroundings, but go the job done quickly.

I was in a similar situation to you a few years ago. My son fell over and cracked a tooth crossing the road. He was monitored for six months at the Weymouth St paediatric dental clinic for six months until Dr Liege Lourenco (on my phone so can't check spelling) decided it had to come out. While we waited for a referral to King's I looked into private extraction options. The two I found were a private hospital in Weymouth St and the Eastman dental clinic on Gray's Inn Road. I am fairly sure both of these were for GA. In the end the NHS gave him an appointment within a couple of weeks and Liege took his tooth out under sedation at King's - she is a senior paediatric dental consultant there.

If I still have the details on my computer I will dig them out and send them to you in the next few days.

I meant to add that Liege told us that if he was in pain we should go to the dental clinic at King's and ask for a same day appointment. He never suffered any pain so I didn't feel I could do this to hurry things along but your poor boy's situation sounds different.

Me again - here's the info from the Eastman on GA and sedation options:

>>>>The initial appointment will be for a consultation with Dr Prableen Anand, her private patients clinic generally runs on Thursday evenings from around 5pm. The consultation fee is £200.00 per every 30minutes excluding x-rays and treatment.

The treatment including the general anaesthetic ranges between £2500-£3500 and the procedure will be done at either the Harley Street surgery or at the Spire Roding surgery in Essex.

If sedation only and not the general anaesthetic the fee would be:
£200 for 30minutes consultation
£200 for treatment for each 30minutes
£150 for sedation.
