Careful re: Streatham and Clapham - the correct stat is "Nearly a quarter of the cohort achieved an A* or an A grade in every A Level subject that they took."

re. non-independent sector I've been looking for those results and I can't see this years for Ernest Bevin or Chestnut Grove. I haven't looked for Graveney so I'll go and do that now.

First you have to say a massive congratulations to all the pupils and their families for achieving such high results.

That said the schools have also done well in selecting the most academic children it can to make their lives easy and to make their results look great.

For the most selective schools above, and consequently those with the best results, they will only allow pupils to take an A Level course if the child achieved an A* at GCSE. Further the pupil, based on exam results, must also be predicted to get an A or A* in their A Level results.
Pupils in these schools who do not hit this criteria, i.e. only got an A or B at GCSE, will be not be allowed to stay on at the 6th form or will be asked to choose different A Levels.

So great results for the pupils, who would likely have achieved their results at any school, especially with such supportive families and well done to all the schools who are not allowed to select their pupils BUT who do equally as well as above schools but with a less academic intake.

This is so true Livegreen. I know a boy who went to Trinity who was "advised" to go to another school for A levels as they felt "he would not be able to keep up with his cohort". What b******s! They basically didn't want him to lower the exam stats (and this is after five years of fees!). So don't pay too much attention to results.

As you say, Livegreen, the results are not comparing like with like. These are able student who would be expected to get good results.

I am in the process of going to lots of open days (YAWN!!!) and one of the headmistresses at one of the schools in her opening speech wisely told us not to look at all these Stats and that if we had an A* child, he / she will probably get A* at most of the schools in the area.

I would tend to agree with this - I am frankly more interested in finding out what these schools do to encourage the B / C students and to make sure these students reach their maximum potential whatever this may be.

Value add is a much better yardstick but very hard to measure.

I do think the grades are important, often for how a school positions itself more than anything, but they are not the be all and end all

good points from all, but schooling with likeminded students does help. Fewer negagtive distractions and a more competitive atmosphere does focus the mind.
