Wifi booster recommendations

Postby BLT » Fri Aug 28, 2015 9:01 am

We've moved into our new house and the wifi coverage is terrible, apparently due to new steel beams in extension. Has anyone had any success with buying a wifi booster? Thanks.

We had similar issues with wifi not reaching all parts of the house - and thinking about it, steel beams might have caused the problem. My tech-savvy little brother told me to get a tp link booster / extender thing (not sure of the exact name) which plugs into a socket and sends the wifi up through the electrical cables to another plug in thing further up the house. Probably a terrible description for any experts out there but that was how I understood it! My brother set it all up for us so not sure how easy it was but it works really well.

We have a Netgear Powerline wifi extender (NETGEAR XWNB5201-100UKS 500Mbps Powerline Wi-Fi Extender/Access Point Kit), about 50 quid from Amazon. It was easy to set up and you can change the name and password to mirror your main wifi network so as you move through the house your devices automatically switch between the two. The downside is that as they switch there is a split second where they disconnect, fine most of the time but when I'm connected to my remote desktop on my work laptop and I move rooms it logs me off but that's the only glitch I've experienced so far.

I have a very similar experience to Mummy Walker re the plug socket solution (my younger Brother was even the one to put it in!)

From what I can see from experience between a better and worse installation is that the only slight limitation is the standard of wiring in the house and the initial strength of the signal so try and get it coming in from where the signal is strongest if you can.
