Boy's name- James or Rory

Postby Mammie1981 » Sat Sep 05, 2015 9:52 pm

Hi everyone, my son is due at the end of October. I can't decide what name to go for between James or Rory, I'd be grateful to know what name you prefer,

Many thanks in advance,

Xxx

Both were in our top 5 but Rory was no.1 for me because we already know many boys called James. (Our other 3 were Jacob, Joseph and Charlie.)

Hi and congratulations!!
James is a lovely name, but I'd go for Rory. A lot more unique and it's got a nice sound to it.

Good luck!

I'd probably go for James. I like Rory but it can be a bit hard to say, I know a few people who can't quite pwonounce their Rs so it ends up sounding like Wowy.

James is good for old or young. Rory lovely too unless you have speech issues...lots of Rs. How about going for Caspar instead!

They are both lovely names. Which sounds better with their surname? And James has lots of shortenings (Jamie, Jim and the like). Would you be happy with those?

We had two potential names for both of my daughters. I took my mother's advice and waited until I clapped eyes on them for the first time to see which name I thought would suit them best. We used the alternative as a middle name.

Good luck! :)

Why not both? James Rory or Rory James - either sounds fine - then you can decide which you prefer.

I prefer James, nicer nickmames: Jamie, Jimmy, Jay etc.

James. Every time James. No question at all; it's the winner hands down. It's a beautiful name.

Congratulations on your lovely news. Good luck! xx

When we were deciding our son's name my husband said it had to go with the word "beer" when he was with his mates in the pub. So can you see his mates going "Rory - beer?" I'm not so sure, whereas "James - beer?" is OK. It's also a bit of a class thing - Rory is quite a posh name, which is fine if he's going to be living in poshland for the rest of his life, but if he ends up doing a job where being posh isn't so helpful then James probably covers more bases. But if you hate names being shortened then Rory will be the one to go for as he'll get called Jim and variations thereof by his mates when he's older and you won't be able to do anything about it (as I've found out with my daughter and indeed my own name).
