August born child - delaying school start in private schools

Postby Nightingale » Sat Sep 26, 2015 9:41 pm

Hi, I've been reading the thread re delaying August born babies but my question is specific to the private sector. I know it is possible to defer for the year and start a child in reception rather than being made to go straight to year 1. However, I would be interested to hear from any parents who have done this and whether it has caused any problems further down the line, especially when considering entry to private senior schools.

Many thanks

Any private school which knows its stuff will not let you enter a child into a year which is incorrect by basic age standards. It will cause you all kinds of problems when they come to secondary school and are out of whack.

The transition from nursery to Reception is less of a change than Reception to Year 1 in so many ways as Reception is still part of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) and is still a transition to proper school learning.

I work in a school and have a May birthday daughter. There is no way I would have her miss out on school even if she was another 12 weeks younger.

If you are planning on staying in the private sector I don't think it is a long term problem, both my boys (currently yr 11 and 13) have children in their classes who are both a year ahead of themselves and a year behind in age. the only problems they have encountered is in Games where they are not allowed to represent their school in some sports if they are not the correct age. If you are thinking of transferring to state school later I would think it would be more of a problem.

Sorry I should have also said I know of several children who repeated a year in private school and thrived. Their parents feel with hindsight they should have started a year later in reception.

Thanks all. I'm interested in any issues with moving from prep to private senior. Rodent - Can you tell me more about what types of problems you think it may cause? I'm aware of the sports one mentioned - thanks - and potential issues if going to state at senior but if there are others ones I would be interested to know more. The private schools I have spoken to about it seem to be very accommodating.

I can't comment for other schools, but where I work, we wouldn't ever take a child outside of its own year as our opinion is that the secondary schools we work with don't like to then have children outside of their yeargroup.

This works both ways - some parents feel their children are very advanced and want them to start school earlier and be pushed, not just with summer babies.

If you are particularly worried, talk to some of the secondary schools you are interested in and see what they say.

What you'll find is that very selective senior schools may not be too accommodating with out of year admissions. Think St Paul's, Winchester, Westminster, etc

But less selective ones, especially on the boarding front, have no issues with that.

Why don't you call a selection of private schools you would consider at senior level and ask what their views are - best source of first hand information.
