something caused it all to fall on floor though
logically i can only assume an animal? unless i find a little pest i will not know what happened
scaredycat as i am
i straight away assume a psycho is involved..

That's crazy.

I think it's amazing that in this country there are still break ins like this! The system works in favour of the criminals unfortunately.

As you cannot shoot an intruder in this country, get a large dog. Fun for the children and will look after you (assuming you get the right working breed).

Have you lent keys to anyone recently? If so could they have been copied or may 'mislaid' so you didn't get them back? I would be considering changing the locks, though I know its a bit drastic unless you're sure someone got in... Maybe you could just change the main lock! I'd be more than a bit spooked if I thought there had been an intruder in the house brandishing a saw!

PS, you asked why someone would do it: I can't believe an opportunistic builder would take such a risk for just a saw but (and this may be an over active imagination on my part...) what if someone wanted the item to commit a crime so wanted someone else's fingerprints on it? On the other hand, maybe it was just a rodent knocking things over in the cellar and the saw was missing already!

I would be completely freaking out too but I think the most likely thing is that the noise you heard was the saw cover falling and you assumed it was the lock. But if you're worried get the locks changed and have a bolt fitted so you know no-one can get in when you're at home. Banham are great - they come and do a security assessment etc.

Do you deadlock your front door when you're home? If you have an old Yale lock, they are very easy to slip. The police showed my husband how to do it with a piece of a Lilt bottle. Many years ago a number of items went missing from my husband's front sitting room, BTC, with no sign of forced entry. Someone had slipped the lock, wandered in, helped themselves and wandered out again. All while there was someone at home. Always deadlock the door when you're at home or install one of the newer Yales that can't be slipped.
