What to burn in our fireplace Post Reply

Does anyone who has an open fire in Wandsworth council area have recommendations on what to burn? ie. smokeless wood, smokeless coal etc. I've just been on their website and seen that they only allow smokeless products to be burnt. Thanks in advance!

Technically we are in a coal only zone, but no one seems to abide by this. My chimney sweep provides logs to most my neighbours and several pubs in the immediate area (including the windmill on the common) who all use logs in their fire places. I bought a big sack of logs off him but you can also buy them from Homebase, B&Q and even Ocado.
We have a fire most weekends and use logs too. Coal gets messy, and not the best of you have children. A coal bucket by the fireplace is just asking for a toddler to come and handle it and get dirt everywhere.

The rules are clear but I haven't seen any sign of council enforcement

Ok thanks Goldhawk. Any idea where you can get smokeless wood from in case the council come knocking?! I'm assuming that is accepted fuel.

They are Defra approved (suitable for use in smokeless zones), 100% natural and can be used alone for an instant fire- or as a tool to start your fire quickly.

its a great time saver for me as all you need to do is light the wrapper.

You can burn logs in certain stoves that are approved for burning wood in smokeless zones. However I find wood a pain compared to smokeless coal. It burns quickly so needs loading frequently or the fire will go out. Invariably take my eye off it, or go out and fire has burnt out. Also you need so much wood, the storage is a problem. Smokeless coal is so much more efficient, it gives more heat and can burn for up to 12 hours, I re- load our stove 3 times in 24 hours (we use it as our main source of heating)
