Anyone ever sand and seal the pine flooring under the carpet Post Reply

Hello mums!

We've just bought a house and are doing quite a bit of renovations before we move in. The builders have now taken up the carpeting and I think that the under floor or 'subfloor' looks awesome. But... has anyone ever kept these floors? If so... what did you do with them?

We did! I don't like carpets and I find wood flooring much easier to keep clean and dust free.
We got it sanded and sealed - it was quite a long/messy process and it doesn't come cheap either but for us it was worth it.

Can you give me an idea of cost...? Does it compare to putting carpeting in?

Way back my husband did ours - hired the equipment for 72 hours and worked like a demon to sand, stain etc AND make the mix to fill the gaps between the boards. I mention the gaps because they're the bits that after 4/5 years desperately needed re-doing (no matter how good a job you do they still drop through eventually) - it wouldn't really matter except for the draught that comes up through them when it's chilly (the air flow which is essential to keep your underfloor timbers healthy comes straight up through 'em!). Nothing a few large rugs can't mitigate a bit. From experience if you've got shed loads of cash then replace with a sold/engineered but otherwise the old pine boards look absolutely fine!!

The boards are tongue and groove - do you think that will make a difference to the drafts?

Would your husband mind sharing his techniques as that is exactly what we will be doing. We do not have a shed load of money and are struggling to figure out how we are going to get everything done that absolutely needs to be done... :-/ You know, plumbing and electrical upgrades, a kitchen, a bathroom... - the important stuff.
