How do you get rid of persistent moths?!

Postby LocalMummy2014 » Fri Jan 15, 2016 10:34 pm

Can anyone help?

We have moths in our clothes cupboards and wardrobes that I just cannot get rid of. I've been using mothballs and yet everything is still being munched through. I've got lots and I replace them regularly to no avail. I've never seen a moth in there though (although I know it's the larvae that do the damage)...

How can I get rid of these moths once and for all - they're destroying all of our clothes!

My mother-in-Law things the council should help as they are pests but I'm not convinced that can be the case...

All advice welcome... Thank you!

Get professional pest control in to spray the place
We have used Beaver in Tooting but all the pest control places will do it

Take out all your stuff and either wash it hot or put it in the freezer - this kills the eggs

the little sticky pheromone strips you can buy (amazon sell them) are good.

However if you have a recurring infestation then professional treatment is probably the only solution

We have been plagued by them too. Here's what I have done after extensive googling.

- empty every affected wardrobe / drawer. Check every single item - shake it and check for holes. Anything effected needs either binning, taking to dry cleaners or putting on a hot wash. They tend to go for wool and cashmere and people say silk too - although for us has all been wool.

- wash or dry clean ALL knitwear. If you wash at home - then put the items in the freezer afterwards to kill any moth eggs. Dry cleaning also kills them.

- Hoover out all wardrobes and drawers and then spray the inside with moth killer spray (horrid and gets your throat).

- when the spray has dried you can put cleaned / frozen things back in. I have bought plastic clothes covers (like dry cleaners) and have one over each sweater and woken coats and suits.

- I have hanging moth repellents in all wardrobes and little sachets too. People say the cedar balls repell then but they lose their smell quickly. The lavender ones have a paste in them. All these need replacing every fe lw law months.

- any sweaters in drawers or boxes under beds are all also in mothproof sealed plastic bags.

Good luck. It's a nightmare i know. I have so many things completely ruined. I did claim in the insurance though and they paid up - amazing how much the damage tots up to !

I just use one of those lavender anti-moth sachets, but it really sounds like you need professional help from pest control service.

ive been battling this one since last year so have tried everything & so far seems to have worked, the best advice is to do everything you can then do it again a month later for it to really work.

http://www.mummyfromtheheart.com/2012/0 ... moths.html

use this spray on carpets :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PROTECTOR-C-1 ... SwPcVVqOVk

use this in wardrobes :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00B ... 1_1&sr=8-1

and keep these in drawers etc :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00S ... MBCT42K9FU

these everywhere work a treat but unfortunately only confirm you have moths & kills half of them :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-x-KRITTERKI ... Swd0BVy34z

pls post or msg me for any other advice. professionals do this same thing, my neighbour has recently had them in & it still didn't work. remember to do everything twice a month apart. Noet : not may around in winter so set to it from 1st march maybe ....

I used Moth bombs which I bought from Amazon.

You have to open all your cupboards and drawers and light the moth bomb and leave it on a plate. Shut the bedroom door and leave it for at least two hours. The room will really smell but it kills all the moths. Once you have left it for as long as you can you then open all the doors and windows to ventilate the room. Your room will smell for a couple of days so you might want to get the perfume out but it really worked for me.

Good luck

We had a massive moth problem - so many of my Wandsworth-based friends have too, that I fear it is becoming endemic in the area.

I hardly dare say this and tempt fate, but I seem to have got rid of them, at least for the moment! Basically, I took the approach suggested by 'mylifestory' - the pheromone traps are incredibly effective (we have had zillions of moth corpses stuck to ours!) but it doesn't feel as though you've done enough, so you need to take further action. My mother gave me a spray but it just made me laugh as it was all about putting the moths off - a nasty smell in the hope that they would just 'go away'.... not good - you need to KILL THEM! I've used all the products suggested, apart from the carpet spray, and it really does seem to have worked - but only because I took the multiple approach. Good luck with it! In the meantime I am going to try an insurance claim for all the lovely jumpers they munched before I took action...

I have used the products from Total Wardrobe Care with some success. I agree it is has to be a multiple and repeated approach. TWC are developing a product to make moths gay, when I spoke to the owner of the company in November the subscription product was due to be launched early this year (I think).

I haven't read the article but I guess it is along the lines of this.....

Good luck, it is a common problem in South-West London.

Previous posts have all suggested good methods and treatments but you must move furniture !! The amount of moth damage that I find when cleaning carpets, is beyond comprehension, all should be moved & thoroughly vacuumed beneath. Make sure you have a Hepa filtered vacuum, as I have seen a lady spread them around the house, by using Henry and it simply blew them out the back
They will settle in dark places and items that never get moved are safest for them, although I use a biodegradable cleaning solution and that seems to remove moths & eggs, as easily as soil

Hello there! Yeah i think all this posts are useful and they told almost all ways of dealing with the moth! But i want to tell you my story about fight vs moths! When i find them in my old car in my garage ( he stays here about 5 years ) at first i use this repellents, but after two days i want to try the special spray, after one week i kill them at last! So which should be concluded, if you want to get rid of moths quickly, better to buy spray or repellents (special traps), because they are the best methods to kill them! Good Luck!
