Posterior Vaginal Wall Prolapse Repair - HELP??

Postby shanks » Wed May 04, 2016 2:07 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping one of you ladies will be able to provide me with some insight on going through a Posterior Vaginal Wall Prolapse Repair...

I prolapsed after the birth of my second child 4 years ago, and have successfully been living with it until the past 6 months or so.

I delayed seeing the GP for a long while out of sheer embarrassment - I mean who really wants to discuss their bowel movements with anyone?? However, I've now gone through the process of seeking help and last night met with a gynaecologist who diagnosed a grade 3 moderate to severe prolapse particularly of the rectum.

His recommendation was to use a Pessary or go ahead with surgery.

Although I feel surgery is most probably the way to go, the reading material online on this isn't exactly encouraging, and appears to predominantly target older post menopausal women.

So, has anyone experience of either Pessaries or the surgery?

With the surgery how long were you out of action? Did you have to wait long to return to exercise? (I'm a fitness freak!), Did it help??

Thank you!!

We've had a message from Sue Lewis which I'm posting here

<start>

I am very sorry for the discomfort the mother is feeling, has she sought the advice of a Women's Health Physiotherapist ?

I treat many ladies with this condition & although it can take 6 months ( sometimes with home use of an electrical stimulator) there will be improvement.

Even teaching correct emptying of bladder / bowels/ correcting lifting techniques & the right exercises to do can make a huge difference.

The NICE guide lines are for 3 months Physio before surgery ( which is a big operation especially the post op recovery with small children.

Sue is very very happy to see or speak to the lady concerned

Hi
Sorry to hear your story, it is never easy addressing these issues! Even if surgery is the best route for you, I would suggest seeking some additional support and help first. These approaches may not fix the problem but they will help you to have a full understanding of how the prolapse has developed. Childbirth is likely to be the main reason but there may be other underlying reasons such as muscle tone in pelvic floor and surrounding muscle groups, your posture and breathing. You may be able to improve the situation and then if/when you have surgery you will be in the best place for this to hold and not create other problems.

Get to a good women's health physio asap, I always recommend White Hart clinic in Barnes but ask around and you are bound to find some one closer if necessary. Gait therapy is excellent for addressing muscle imbalances and Arvigo therapy for improving circulation in abdomen and pelvis to promote healthy tissue/ muscle function. All of these things can be tried now and also after surgery to help with recovery.

If you want more details then please pm me as I don't want to breach the posting rules on here. I am an Arvigo Therapist and a yoga teacher specialising in pregnancy and women's health but I am posting this in the capacity of sharing vital information!

And a message to other mums who may feel something is not quite right, please please please get checked out preferrably by a women's health physio asap!!! The earlier you are checked the more likely you can make a full recovery.

It continually saddens me that we don't consider women's health a priority in this country. In France every woman has proper postnatal physio after having a baby. If you have had a caesarian birth it is also important to take care of this department!!! Or even if you haven't had a baby! Various factors contribute to problems in this area.

Do try physio if you haven't already. It can make a huge difference. St George's or Guys both have a fantastic reputation though you may have to wait a few weeks. While you wait Jo Fordyce, specialising in women's health at the Wimbledon Physiocentric clincic is brilliant.

I would highly recommend Camilla at 6 Physio on the kings road who specialises in womens health. Also have a conversation with Eliza who not only runs buggyfit on Wandsworth Common and Booty barre also does an amazing class called Holistic Core and Restore or if you prefer happy to see you on a one to one basis.

Christine at Physio For All would be a good person to speak to. She is a Women's Health Physio and has sorted the pelvic floors of a good many of us around here. She is very knowledgeable so maybe someone to chat to to get any extra info you need.

Jennifer Westley is the Woman's Heath Specialist at Six Physio Monument Station(you can arrive at Bank Station on the Northern Line and it's practically next to the Monument exit). She is excellent, very supportive and can either help or point you to top specialists. You could try and talk to her on the phone first possibly. Number there is: 020 3206 1082.

Hi there and sorry to hear you're having these issues.

I am certainly happy to discuss your situation and see if I can help via my Holistic Core Restore programme.

Put very simply, pelvic floor muscles can become weak through pregnancy and childbirth, the menopause, regular pounding exercises such as running, or simply through poor diet and an unhealthy lifestyle. These weakened muscles are then simply not able to do their job properly, and this can lead to urinary and faecal incontinence and without proper treatment and exercise, this can develop into pelvic organ prolapse.

The aim of Holistic Core Restore is to be a BESPOKE programme for women in all life phases wishing to improve their Pelvic Floor, Core Strength and overall wellbeing.

NEXT COURSE STARTS 26th MAY 2016
Thursdays 7.30pm at St James Hall, Ousley Road SW17
or we can work 1-2-1

Please email me elizadoalot@hotmail.com to book or discuss further.

Wishing you all the best in whatever route to recovery you choose.

Eliza
