I am delighted to say my phone line is back on again now. I didn't get any email update from them so it was only when I picked up the phone to check this morning that I realised it was working. My husband tweeted them with a link to this thread so maybe that helped!
Needless to say I am not at all impressed with Virgin as a result of this. I have only been with them a month. With my previous provider (orange), if the phone line went wrong (which it did about 2-3 times a year) they were able to forward all calls to my mobile. Virgin say that can't do this.
