Child Psychologist? Please Help

Postby LuLuLondon » Mon Jun 27, 2016 9:31 am

Hello all

I'd be really grateful for some help. My daughter (7) is a huge worrier and her anxieties are really starting to impact all our lives and we are getting increasingly worried.

We've tried worry dolls, a worry box and lots of talking, but we have tears and sobbing pretty much every morning and some evenings.

She is very reflective, a quiet personality, bit of a perfectionist and just not a very happy little soul.

What can we do to help? It's eating me up and I just want her to be happy and carefree. Can anyone recommend a child psychologist or therapist for her? I don't really want to go down that route, but don't see another option.

Thank you.

Have you tried going to your GP and getting a referral through them. My son had the same issues and we went to the child psychologist in the surgery. Sadly it didn't really help and in the end he just needed lots of reassurance from us and he has slowly started to grow out of it. A lot of it is to do with confidence issues and we went to an amazing lady who helped us give our son the confidence he needed. http://www.theparentpractice.com
They were actually far more helpful in the end. We did some one to one sessions with them, not with our son but as a couple to try and work together on tackling the issues and it was brilliant. Good luck.

hello:

i know what you are going through; my daughter started having severe anxiety
about age seven. i went to my gp and she was referred to a child psychologist
but didn't seem to improve much. she was diagnosed at age eleven with ocd so
i researched child/adolescent psychiatrists and took her to see professor peter
hill. he was an amazing find. my daughter by that stage resisted therapy of any
sort, but he talked me through the stages, causes, signs, triggers and possible
strategies i could take to help her on a daily basis. i am still very grateful for his
wisdom and kindness.

Hello

my cousin is a clinical psychologist for children in Manchester. She recently posted the link below which might be of some help:

Dear LuluLondon,

We've just seen your post and wanted to offer some reassurance. The concerns you are describing are very common--anxiety and perfectionism are number 1 worry for parents who come to us. There is so much pressure on young people these days, both in their social and educational life and sometimes the standards they set themselves are so high they are unachievable. These concerns however can be effectively addressed with therapeutic intervention.

I think at the moment there is an 8-month waiting list for NHS CAMS services in Wandsworth, with similar timeline in Lambeth, so going privately might be a better option given what you are describing.

We would normally be happy to offer our services, but at the moment we have a small waiting list with our child psychologist Dr Redfern (although of course we will be happy to add you to it as well).

What we can offer however is a session just for you to learn some cognitive skills to help your daughter whilst you are finding support for her. We do find it is so important to work collaboratively with the whole family to ensure long-term results.

With best wishes
Ana @ Fernwood

Dear Lulu London,
I'm really sorry to hear the difficulties your daughter is having. I'm a Clinical Psychologist specialising in working with children and young people and have worked in the NHS for the last 12 years. I will also now be offering private therapy to children, young people and their families/carers from mid September in Clapham so if you wanted to come for an initial assessment please do send me a private message and I'd be delighted to talk with you in the first instance. I also fully appreciate however, you may want to see someone before this in which case you may wish to contact the Wellness Centre on Abbeville Road where Child Psychologists practice or Children's Therapies in Putney. Very best wishes Dr Rebecca South
