Night time toilet training for 4.5 year old

Postby Earlsfield mummy » Tue Jul 26, 2016 11:12 pm

My little boy is now 4.5. He's been dry in the day for ages but we are really struggling with night times. He just doesn't seem to wake up when he needs a wee. It's as if the bladder full signal just can't get through his deep sleep.

We've tried praising, lifting and we make sure he goes for a wee just before bedtime. Sometimes (oddly often when we are away) he is fine at night but just when we think we've cracked it, he regresses and has another bad spell.

Any suggestions on how to tackle it greatly recieved. I don't want him to be restricted in terms of sleepovers etc when he starts school in September.

I don't have any specific advice other than maybe he's just not ready and I wouldn't worry about sleepovers - never heard of 4 year olds having sleepovers!

When my son turned 5 I used pants that alarm when you wet them and it worked in around a week. They were quite expensive but no more nappies at night now.

Hi there

I wouldn't get worried to much for now.Having an accident sometimes it's still ok at this age.
It sounds like you re doing everything right praising, stickers, toilet before bed time..so don't worry too much about it.
I also think that in September with the new routine things will be settling more and it will help also to understand the behaviour of your child and the other peers.

For now best wishes

Anna

My son is 5 and still has the odd accident. We kept him in pull ups until he turned 5 as he just wasn't ready to go through the night without them. We used to take him to the toilet at 7pm and then at 11pm (ish) - only when his pull up was dry in the morning consistently, did we stop using them. We still take him at 11pm and if we forget, then quite often we end up with a wet bed. Doesn't seem to bother him in the slightest however, he takes off his PJs and goes back to sleep in a wet bed....

My 5yr old has been in nappy at night only until about 3-4 weeks ago when she stopped wetting herself - just like that - and doesn't want to wear nappy before she goes to bed. Before that we tried without nappy but she'd always wet the bed. Then we stopped and tried again but she wasn't ready until recently. So i wouldn't worry too much about it.

Hi Earlsfield Mummy,

I know you posted this a while ago but was wondering how you are getting on?

I am a Women's Health and Paediatric Physio, and have a special interest in children's incontinence and bed wetting as I am from a bed wetting family myself.

I trained with Dawn Sandalcidi from the USA this year (she is a world renowned children's continence and bed wetting specialist Physio) and I've been having some great results with the children I'm helping currently.

I would be happy to chat to you on the phone and see if there is any other advice I can offer you!?

I found it useful to ask other childrens parents how and when they did it. a friend has set a target with her daughter & we agreed to aim for the same. my LO weed herself a lot at first at night before the set date but in her head she didn't notice and thought she was head of schedule. don't say anything and it does come pretty soon after that despite a lot of bed changing daily!
