Holiday suggestions for mum and 2 year old

Postby 1sttimemummy » Tue Aug 23, 2016 3:17 pm

Hi,

I am considering going on holiday with my 2 year old in September (once the schools are back), it will be just my son and I, so I was hoping to go somewhere, where I will not look too out of place i.e. a complete loner

Has anyone taken their child on holiday by themselves before? Are there any tour operators that specialise in this? I thought about going to Mark Warner but I'm guessing it will be full of two parent families and that's exactly what I don't want.

All I really want to do is sit around the pool and play with my child, but it would be nice to talk to other adults as well, and perhaps have a stroll around the local area.

I hope I'm not the only mum that wants to go away with her child on my own, and that someone can give me some suggestions.

Thank you.

Euro camps are great if you don't mind self catering, heck out their website they have loads! We've been to a few in France and they have great facilities for toddlers. They are also much cheaper in September when school starts. Make the most of it, my little one starts big school next week so no more cheap holidays for us.

Hello!

I am a single mum and I appreciate your concerns! I have to say I've always found camping to be awesome. There are always kids around to play with and everyone is always friendly.

However if you want something a bit smarter..

I used to work for Mark Warner and I'd say most families will be your typical 2 parent type. But I'm sure you wouldn't feel out of place as the kids club will ensure your little one meets friends and you'll naturally meet the parents etc etc. There are so many activities that different family members go for that it's really only at meal times where you might feel that you're somehow different (although I imagine many couples will be looking at you with envy at your freedom!!).

I put together African luxury family holidays so I can definitely say you'd feel relaxed by a pool in Tanzania or Kenya, but that might be a bit far for you with a two year old! I'm taking my son (just 5) to Kenya on my own this October - only staying where there is a pool!

Good luck, I'm sure you'll have a great time wherever you go.

Find a large sandy beach, some place further south so it's still hot in Sept, get a few toys for sand/sea and you are done!
My kids could spend hours on the sand while they were 2-3 years old

I used to go a lot with them on the island of Crete - has some pretty large sandy beaches and nice hotels. September it's still very hot, the water is amazing, and prices are lower. I usually organize the trip on my own but you can surely find a lot of agencies offering pretty low budget September vacations there

We went to Mark Warner out of school holidays, and there were actually quite a few mothers there on their own with their children. They run a communal table in the evening so that people can chose to sit with others if they want to. Certainly worth looking into.

Hi - I took my 2 and 4 year olds on an out of season Mark Warner holiday on my own. From the moment I stepped off the plane and the staff took hold of my luggage to the Mini's party at the end of the week, it was a real break! I spent the mornings chilling with them and chatting to other mums by the paddling pool and the afternoons trying watersports. There was also tennis, bike riding, swimming and spa going to do.

I avoided the singles get together as too cringey for me. So that I didn't eat on my own, I took my 2 kids to dinner with me (my favourite dinner companions anyway)....I think otherwise you might feel quite conspicuous and most other single mums and dads did the same. Most people were really friendly so you'll definitely have someone to chat to if you need a bit of adult company!

Thank you all so much for the suggestions. I am overwhelmed with the responses and PM's I've had.

This has given me so much food for thought, such great suggestions!

It's great to know that other mums go on holiday alone with their little ones too :D

Come to my gites in France!
I run 3 luxury child friendly gites in a small rural village in the Languedoc - I (single mother too!) have a heated pool, and a well equipped toy room, trampoline etc and am 30 mins from the Mediterranean beaches and loads of other things to do with a toddler (and for an adult too!)
I am around (and am very sociable!) plus there are other guests who may or may not have toddlers (this week I have a toddler and baby) but its intimate and as social as you want it to be.

check it out www.maisondelaroche.com and I can offer a discount to NappyValley Mums
