Need advice on bicycles for Mum and three kids

Postby abbevillemum » Thu May 05, 2011 8:15 am

Morning, can anyone give me some advice on what sort of bike to buy that would transport three children? I have heard that trailers are unsafe? And can they carry three children (5 yr old plus two 16 month olds)? Also, I have seen some Mums and Dads on bikes that have a box at the front and the children sit in that with belts/harnesses. Has anyone got one of these - are they easy enough to ride? I called Evans Cycles in Clapham but they had no idea what I was talking about! What are these type of bikes called?? I am no cyclist so advice would be much appreciated! :D

Try Velorution on Great Titchfield St. They have a range of family bikes by Christiana. There's also a really good bike shop on Lamb's Conduit St. that do these sort of bikes. Rushing this reply as am about to leave the house but hope it's of help. There's also a family trike so you could google that. good luck.

Hi, we have use a croozer bike trailer for two children which can be fitted to either my bike or my husbands bike then we have a child seat for the third child. Its hard work but good fun, any good bike shop should sell them. Hope this helps, thanks.

HI,

I've just bought a Babboe bike

http://www.babboe.co.uk/

I use it for transporting my 2 year old twins and I love it! There is space for 4 children and it comes with 4 harnesses.

They are pricey but a lot of fun, the girls love riding around in it (even if I do tend to get a few odd looks!)

The only thing to be aware of is that they are quite heavy. If you live and cycle around flat places then the normal bike is fine, but if you cycle around areas with hills then I'd recommend getting the one with electric pedal assist. This just helps you get up the hilly bits with the weight of the children.

If you live in Wandsworth area and fancy a try out let me know!

Liz

PS, I definitely think that these bikes are safer than the trailers as the trailers seem to be so low....also think you can only fit 2 kids in the trailers but I may be wrong.

I agree with you, Babboe bikes are fantastic, I bought an electric one for my 2 little ones and it just changed my life...

The kids love it and they're more stable than a bike with a trailer.

Although pricey, Babboe bikes are the less expensive on the market and we calculated that we offset the price in less than 2 years, just saving on petrol and meters.

Good luck

I just went on the Babboe.co.uk website, you should have a look as they have special offers at the moment and they organise free trials as well. Good luck!

Thanks so much everyone for your replies - I'm on to it now and will let you know how I get on! I am a bit nervous as I am a hopeless cyclist but I think it will make life so much easier getting to baby classes / school runs etc without having to find a car space!

I am from Luv Handles Ltd. and we have tried and tested all of these products. We run a bike boutique in the Wandsworth Area. The tricky part about these trikes is getting the one that has best value and performs well over time. Also dimensions are very important to, from a storage point of view.

I have attached an image of the ones we carry. They come in better quality, and specification, and style than the Babboe and Christiania Tricycles. However all the trikes have the same function in mind, as a transport carrier ( Kid's, Shopping, Dogs etc )

I will have one at Northcote Road Market Tomorrow ( Saturday ) And happy to show you the design. We will give you all the knowledge you need to make the right decision, and we can ensure we wont sell you something that you don't need.

We offer rentals initially to ensure its the right move for your lifestyle. But come try one for free first!
