Szerma - on DIY shops, it's a little out-of-range from Northcote Rd, but if anyone fancies a stroll it's worth a recommendation for the little run of DIY shops and builders merchants on Lavender Hill - they all welcome custom, they don't expect you to be an expert, and the surprise I found after trekking repeatedly to Wandsworth is that they tend to be cheaper than Homebase and B&Q for a lot of the range!
- Lavender Hill Hardware (small but a bit of an Aladdin's cave; properly locally run - they have one other shop in Brixton)
- Decor Express (two thirds of the way along Lavender Hill, you canl;t miss th ehuge blue sign) - bigger, newer, very helpful Polish owner operated and focussed on paint and plumbing plus their recently opened hardware and hinges shop a few doors down - but beware, they're only open weekdays and Saturday mornings!
- LHP Lavender (at 2 Queenstown Road) - looks like a plumbers showroom, but actually sells every plumbing related component ever to the general public, and as many of the customers are actual plumbers the prices are trade prices too - they are almost always quite a lot cheaper than the big multiples in Wandsworth. You can take something random along and say "have you got anything that will fit this", which I rather like...
- Barker 8 (at 8 Queenstown Road, the yellow shop just down from the Mini Sainsburys) - the absolute classic, an almost unique remaining example of a shop that still does counter service - doesn't look like much from the outside but seems to stock virtually everything. The more obscure the item the more rummaging around it will take, and worth a look just for the experience!
- Lavender Hill Tool Hire (Lavender Hill) - long established hirer of all manner of power tools, as well as ladders - refreshingly no nonsense and sensible
I wasn't planning on writing a trade directory, but having belatedly stumbled across these myself (I live at this end of LH) I hope this is of interest to others...
On Northcote Road - I hear we are likely to lose Rymans on St Johns Road (there's approved planning to knock three of the small shops including that one together to one unit), it's a shame, never a glamorous place but useful. An H&M would be a good addition but it'd be more a shop for next to the station, they need very high footfall to work.
On food - I'm surprised there is no branch of Carluccios in Battersea (given Earlsfield has one and we are their target market), though Valentina on Lavender Hill seems to be doing the same thing slightly better. I suspect we will get a Pret somewhere near the station if a decent unit becomes free - they've just opened in Wandsworth, and seem to be doing well - though there is a real lack of the right type of units for them. These chains wouldn't really add much to Northcote Road, but the shabby shops opposite the station entrance could do with a refit to accommodate them.
