Daughter not talking yet

Postby mum81 » Mon Nov 14, 2016 9:23 pm

My 22 month old daughter hasn't started talking yet (she can say mama and dada but no other 'words'), she is happy and healthy (hearing has been checked - all fine), and does seem to understand most of what we say but it does still worry me as all the other children can say so much more. She's at nursery part time and when I am with her I do talk to her, read lots of books, and sing songs but I am concerned that I should be doing more to help. I would be grateful for anyone else's experience or advice as to what I could do to help her?

I would book a 2 year check with your health visitor and have a chat to them about it and ask for some ideas. Some children are just late talkers and get there in their own time - she's very young so don't worry, sounds like you're doing all the right things.

Hello i am a nanny with 22 years experience and i came across similar situation 3years ago what i did is to talk nonstop to the child you look at her or him in the eyes and say for example all your plane for today like we going for a walk play with the dog eat a donut anything as long as you tell what happening and what you going to do the most important is to praise all the time I hope those advice will help HouriaXxx

Hello

Wandsworth council run regular "talk shops" for under 5s. There are speech therapists who can put your mind at rest. I emailed Wandsworth children services to find out details. Classes run every week or so in locations across the borough.

Good luck. My daughter is a chatterbox now but understand your concern.

We had a similar situation with my daughter who is now two and a half. Six months ago she didn't have many words and wasn't really attempting to put words together into sentences. At her two year check the HV said they'd keep it under review and sure enough I got a call from a(nother) HV three months later to follow up. By that time her speech had rapidly improved, and is still improving. A lot of what she says is still quite indistinct (we can understand her but others who aren't "tuned in" struggle a bit) but she is talking A LOT, in full sentences, and has a much bigger vocabulary - it's just that she hasn't managed some letter sounds yet. Given the improvement in the last six months I'm confident there isn't a problem - she was just a bit of a late starter. Might not have helped that she's our second and our older daughter is even more of a chatterbox!

My daughter didn't talk until 3, she was saying just words. Now is 6 and can't stop talking. Don't worry, it will come. My second daughter was 1 years old and she was talking full sentences.... :-)

Try not to worry. my daughter was exactly the same - had lots of sounds but wasn't really presenting many 2 syllable words (think it was just muma and dada). I flagged at her 2 yr review, they said to keep an eye on it but weren't overly concerned.

But by one month later the words had just came tumbling out and by 2 and a half, when she went to pre-school, she was assessed as having pretty really good language skills for her age.

I would say keep an eye on it but it could genuinely be a non-issue.
