Electrician recommendation - lights gone on one floor

Postby broodje » Wed Nov 16, 2016 2:04 pm

The lights on one of the floors in our house are gone (but not the sockets) - got an emergency electrician and he says that the problem must be with the wires/joints (?) that he can't access so the whole floor needs to be rewired. This electrician only does emergency call outs so I need to find someone good who can quote for a re-wire.

Does anyone have a recommendation? Preferably, an electrician who actually did a rewire/part rewire. I literally don't know where to start!

Also, what is involved? Will my walls and ceilings be totally messed up and will I
need to redecorate completely?

Thanks!

I have used DB Electricals for similar work and found them good, pleasant to deal with, and reasonably priced. I'm not sure that you need a rewire - so make sure that you ask them to check that rather than just assuming that it is necessary.

I found them through recommendations on this site so if you search you will find some. The contact number I have is 07985660017 and email is info@dbelectricals.co.uk I note that it is three years ago or so since I used them - we haven't had any problems except for a couple of dimmer fuses blowing after two years.

I think this is highly unlikely.

We've had major issues with our wiring (rogue electrician during build), and not once have we had to rewire a whole floor.

That said, dodgy connections can be hard to fix and will inevitably involve some damage to your walls/ceiling. Also, if your wiring is very old it may well be cost-effective to rewire completely.

PM me if you want me to bring over my electrician for a quote.

Alchemy, Papinian,

Many thanks for your recommendations. I will be getting quotes (and second opinion on whether I need a rewire) and shall report back on how it went.
