Julian, India is a very big country with very diverse food history!
Southern Indian food, like you tried in Kerala is very different to the northern indian/bangladeshi food which is the main-stay of British indian restaurants, so you wouldn't expect to have anything like it in anywhere other than a Keralan restaurant
Just like Spanish tapas wouldn't taste much like German food!
There are some great South Indian/Goan/Keralan restaurants in Tooting, and Sri Lankan food (as found in the lovely place in Balham) can be quite similar to Keralan food
