Books for the beach?

Postby tooposhtopush » Tue Aug 01, 2017 5:18 pm

Hi
Every year I struggle to find great books to read on the beach and so I want to share some ideas (and hopefully get some ideas back) so from me I have LOVED the following...

1) The Dry - an amazing thriller - totally brilliant
2) Darktown - gripping but really depressing
3) Sleeping in the Ground - Peter Robinson - OK but not his best
4) Testimony by Scott Turrow (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01 ... UTF8&psc=1) is a slow start but gets good
5) Camino Island

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01 ... UTF8&psc=1

is ok

Can anyone suggest any others?

The Dry was by far the best!

The Dry was amazing! The couple next door was really good - just finished. I've been recommended Tin Man and Among the Lemon Trees - haven't read them yet!

100 Years of Solitude - Gabriel Garcia Marquez
The House of the Spirit - Isabel Allende
All of the Toni Morrisson, number one would be Beloved
And
Life is so good by George Dawson. A story of an ex slave who learnt to read aged 98. Inspiring.
Enjoy your holidays

Thanks for recommendation of The Dry - I've just reserved a copy at the library!

Have you read any Donna Leon's Brunetti murder mysteries? She's done about 12 of them. I'm nearly finished Death in a Strange Country and really enjoying it. Not exactly a challenging read if that's what you are after, just a good hard to put down bit of escapism.

I would like to add Sabine Durrant's three books (they're quite short and you can buy a kindle version). They're thrillers and two of them are set in Nappy Valley (one starts with a body being found on Wandsworth Common) so it adds an extra bit of excitement of being able to visualise what she's writing about. They're quite short and easy to read and she writes beautifully.

The Power by Naomi Alderman is amazing, best book I've read in a really long time.

Books by Antoine Laurain are great - I loved "The Red Notebook" & "The President's Hat" https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/1 ... ne_Laurain
Also everything by Victoria Hislop and "The Rosie Project" by Graeme Simsion

I recommend Katherine Woodfine's Sinclair Mysteries. They are aimed at young adult but I found them quite captivating. The first in the series is Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Colm Toibin

We have all read Brooklyn (or seen the film) and in any event that was sooo 2009

But there is also Nora Webster, which any of us with an Irish background will bring back fond memories

But my favourite is the Testament of Mary. Part of the bible re-written in a way that is relevant for us all given our fears about society and terrorism and freedom of speech today (I'm not religious like, just saying ...).

I'd love to suggest my own memoir, Traveling with Ghosts. Maybe not as light and breezy as a typical beach read, but you can read an excerpt from the Guardian here:
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyl ... ing-ghosts
Probably not the best book for a beach holiday in Thailand....
