Most nurseries use a blend of methods and approaches to create their own distinctive programme, ethos and atmosphere. That’s why meeting a variety of nurseries and getting a good understanding of what they offer is so important.
Come to the Independent Schools Show this weekend to speak to a huge number of nurseries and pre-prep schools exhibiting: http://www.schoolsshow.co.uk/nursery-pre-prep
There are a couple of well-known philosophies that many nurseries subscribe to. Montessori nurseries believe that children become self-motivated, creative learners and achieve greater independence in a child-led environment, where the children choose what and when they learn. Steiner Waldorf believes that formal learning of the three R’s (rhythm, repetition and reverence) should not start until the age of seven. Before that age the focus is on social, emotional and physical development.
All pre-schools catering for children under the age of 5 have to follow the government’s statutory guidance and are assessed by Ofsted, so all the nurseries that you talk to at the show will have an Ofsted rating – make sure you check what it is.
The sort of nursery your child attends can have a big impact on their educational career – it’s likely to be the first educational establishment they will experience, so a place where people who build confidence and inspire a love of discovery is key.
We also have theatre sessions with leading experts discussing important topics and answering your questions.
If your child has specific learning requirements, you will want to attend ‘SEN: What Can You Do?’ on Saturday 11th November at 11.15am. If your child was born after March you should attend ‘Helping Summer born Children Reach their Potential’ on Sunday 12th November at 12.05pm.
