After school nanny - Questions regarding pay

Postby Esille » Sun Apr 29, 2018 10:46 pm

Hey there

Am about to employ my first after school nanny (having always had full time nannies). Most of them seem to want at least 20 hours.

Do you pay your ASN 52 weeks per year (like you would a full time one) or only the days/hours that she actually works?

Secondly, is it still the employer, who is responsible for paying her/his taxes?

thanks everyone

What have you agreed with the nanny?

Will they only work term time or do you want them to work longer hours in the school holidays?

I think hours worked is more usual for this
You would still be their employer and need to do tax/ni/pension etc

Forgot to add - make sure you agree a GROSS wage - not a net one
They may have other employment and may not choose to split their tax code

I was JUST about to write the same thing.

As opposed to FT nannies where any attempt to skip paying taxes or not pay holiday entitlement is, quite rightly, seen as illegal with a PT nanny it depends on what has been agreed. It's not uncommon for the younger ones to juggle it with bar work or the older ones (and I know i'm generalising but YKWIM) with volunteering/church so it's much much more ad hoc.

hope that helps

I could have just written "What Goldhawk Said"!

My take on the taxes point is that this person is an employee because you will require them to be working for you at set hours every week during termtime and there is no discretion about this. Therefore I would have thought you would have to pay their taxes pension etc. On how you do the payroll, we were advised to calculate how many hours the nanny will work over the year and then divide it so that the salary is spread pro rata over the year. This was more for our and the nanny’s cash flow management though. I’d advise having a chat to Nannytax or another payroll company who were really helpful when we were trying to navigate this.

We pay our after school nanny’s tax - even though less hours she is still our employee. She does more hours in the holidays and we annualise the salary (same each month calculated on the basis of total hours per year).
