What DO we want on Northcote Road??? Locked

So the shop in between the fish and chips and honey shops is going to be..........................a bakery. Don't know the full information yet but sounds promising.

A cash machine that doesn’t charge - don’t understand why such a highly pedestrianised street doesn’t have a proper cash machine! Other things which I think it will be nice is a proper sushi/ Japanese restaurant (kids love sushi too!), a Mexican/ tacos place as a change from the multitude of pizza/ pasta places on Northcote Road! And definitely a proper green grocer and fish monger will be nice too!

Toyko Kitchen on Battersea Rise is a pretty decent place and well worth supporting. Fish mongers, well we had one and it closed for the usual reasons so the stall is the next best thing and again worth supporting.

The slab of meat outside Macellaio...don’t knock it till you try it. They have one of the best steaks in London (my husband was part of a steak club so we’ve eaten our fair share). It’s not on full display inside so it won’t be in your face while you’re eating. And the lunch special is a great deal too!

OBoys, interesting that you ask for a proper fishmonger. The fish van on Northcote is brilliant. I've been buying my fish there at least three times a week since I moved into the area 8 years ago and its always been great quality. My Spanish side of the family tell me the fish is as good as you get in Spain if not better and believe me they can be very snobby about their fish! They supply endless restaurants too. Before they had the van, they had the unit which is now The Flight Centre but were pushed out because of rates. I think you'd find a traditional fishmonger couldnt afford the rents either on Northcote unless it is once again over priced.

Jan at 78 Northcote Road has closed down, just days after the relaunch. Site has been repossessed by the landlord.

I have never been too impressed with the fish stall on Northcote Road unfortunately. I remember when they had their own shop which was better and we also used to have a Fishworks restaurant that sold fish to the public till 9-10pm at night which was very handy.

The only choice now seems to be Moxon’s at Clap South and put up with their ludicrous prices and rude customer service.

Problem is most the new younger residents who have moved in and replaced the families in the area wouldn’t know what to do with fish unless it’s battered and served with chips or frozen and covered in breadcrumbs.

Given the number of moped food delivery drivers that now litter the road at all times of the day and night I am surprised we still have a butchers tbh.

Is the fish-van good - freshness, selection and price? I used to buy from their shop on St Johns about a million years ago. Is it better to buy from them now rather from than the waitrose and co-op practically next door?

I think the fish van is excellent in terms of quality and price
You definitely wouldn’t get close to the freshness from a supermarket so that makes them great value for money

But if you want multipacks of farmed salmon fillets, it’s obviously going to be cheaper in a supermarket

I had some wonderful turbot from them last week - you wouldn’t ever see that in Waitrose

All the fish from the van is brought fresh from the market in the early hours each day, their driver goes there at 3/4am. Fish from supermarkets is vacuum packed to keep it from going off but can have been packed for weeks - I stopped buying from supermarkets after a newspaper claimed it could have been months. The fish sold over counters in supermarkets has also more often than not been frozen beforehand which is why you have to eat it within a day, its not freshly caught at all. In terms of price also, I find the fish van cheaper than Waitrose and they have far more selection - you can also ask them to get something in particular for you and theyre more than happy to do that. I honestly couldnt recommend them enough (I dont eat meat so eat fish all the time!).

Why is the fish stall, run by the owners of the fish shop, worse than the shop?

Moxons rude?  You obviously never shopped at Doves; they wrote the book on crap customer service.

It's quite a crass generalisation to state that young shoppers don't know how to cook fish.  Are these the same young people that never watch TV and all the cooking programmes, the same young people that frequent the local restaurants, adding to the local economy?  If you want a boring fish recipe i'll happily put you in touch with my grandad.

It might come as a surprise to you but those moped delivery drivers are also part of the economy and I would wager that a lot of people that can afford a delivery from Byron would also be the same people that you're seeing buying fish, using the local pubs and restaurants, cheese, meat, wine shops etc...  Let's not slag them all off, eh?

Moxons rude? That amazes me. I have to say that the service in the Clapham South branch is superb. They are friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. I know that Robin Moxon cares very much about this so would be interested to hear more.

Macellaio: had the opportunity to try their lunch special (£12 for a starter and rump steak main) and was very impressed. Great starter salad, and the rump was a decent size portion and importantly was high quality and cooked well, so it was as tender as a fillet that would be served in other restaurants. Well worth the money.

New opening - Meat Liquor - Just saw the news here that this burger chain is going to open up a branch, next to Franco Manca, in September. I used to like their burgers, but I think with the strong competition now in London, it is getting rather average. Still better than Byron or GBK though.
