What DO we want on Northcote Road??? Locked

Ugh. Not more meat specialist restaurants. Northcote Road has turned into a vegetarian wasteland. We never eat there now.

Whenever I go to Northcote Road I buy fish from the fish from the fish van. You can really taste how fresh it is - the fish and shellfish knock the socks if anything you'd buy in the supermarkets. Perhaps if everyone buys from them they will have a shop again. To be honest Northcote rd reminds of Portobello rd in many ways, which is my hometown, and it's a shame it is so expensive for businesses with interesting and quality products vlose down because they cant afford the rents. If locals support the independents it will make a huge difference.

There is an awful lot of empty shops right now. The Carphone Warehouse site has shut which leaves 3 empty in a row there.

At the other end of Northcote there is a shop opening called Uncommon Food(?) but I don’t know any information about it.

I have never been too impressed with the fish stall on Northcote Road unfortunately. I remember when they had their own shop which was better.

Problem is most the new younger residents who have moved in and replaced the families in the area wouldn’t know what to do with fish unless it’s battered and served with chips or frozen and covered in breadcrumbs.

Given the number of moped food delivery drivers that now litter the road at all times of the day and night I am surprised we still have a butchers tbh.

Why is the fish stall, run by the owners of the fish shop, worse than the shop?

Moxons rude?  You obviously never shopped at Doves; they wrote the book on crap customer service.

It's quite a crass generalisation to state that young shoppers don't know how to cook fish.  Are these the same young people that never watch TV and all the cooking programmes, the same young people that frequent the local restaurants, adding to the local economy?  If you want a boring fish recipe i'll happily put you in touch with my grandad.

It might come as a surprise to you but those moped delivery drivers are also part of the economy and I would wager that a lot of people that can afford a delivery from Byron would also be the same people that you're seeing buying fish, using the local pubs and restaurants, cheese, meat, wine shops etc...  Let's not slag them all off, eh?

The fish van on Northcote Road has changed hands more times than I care to remember.

Yes the original owners did have a shop on Northcote Road before they opened up the van but since then there has multiple different owners running it.

The last time I went I purchased some fresh squid and it smelt so bad when I went to cook it for lunch on the day of purchase the bloke cleaning it must have realised it was off.

Have never been back.

Service at Moxons has improved of late but there was a time when they only employed ex public school boys with a chip on their shoulder. Thankfully those two have moved on.

Ratski, you are totally wrong about the fish van owner. It is still owned by the same guy (Jim) who had the shop from the start. He had a partner (Joe) who retired a couple of years ago and was a face you probably remember. Before that they had a younger guy run the stall who left to become a cabbie. Since Joe retired the stall is now being run by the owners nephew Toby who is on the stall every day, and Jim is still very involved with the supply. If you chat with them you will see that they are extremely nice and helpful guys and would have been mortified that your squid smelt. Personally I have never had a single bad experience in 8, nearly 9 years.

There’s now a proper bakery on Northcote Road!

Warren’s Bakery at 91 Northcote Road has opened over the Summer, and it looks like a nice addition to the area.

Not sure Greggs counts as a “proper” bakery in my books...

It’s a branch of a Cornwall bakers, so they do lovely pasties as well as bread, pastries, cakes, quiches etc.

Friendly service and fair prices too.

Has anybody been to Manifesto, the new pizzeria where Park Road Kitchen used to be? Any good?

No and am waiting to hear since I have gone off the other 2 piiZerias on the road . Pizza da Valta on Bellevue Rd is wonderful though.

We tried the pizzas from Manifesto last night and they are delicious.
You can call them and order in advance which we liked.
Would recommend them. Nice and friendly.

Yes! We went to Manifesto at the weekend and I'm happy to report the pizzas were delicious! I've had so many bad pizzas in my time that I always groan when the kids decide that's what they want, but I have to say I would be happy to go here any time. I read somewhere that they prove their dough for about 48 hours and use none but the best fior di latte mozzarella. Anyway, whatever - it tasted really good, in fact second only to a pizza I had on Capri when I was 13. The red wine was also nice as was the organic cola (tastes like a healthy coke!). It's a tiny place (they don't take bookings) but they do takeaways. Please do try them as they're not in the best location on Northcote Road in terms of passing trade. Reasonably priced too. Just note that a couple of their pizzas (they only have a very small menu) are without tomato sauce. I had the 'daisy' (margherita). Just yum.

I can also vouch for Manifesto. We got takeaway pizzas and they were delicious with fresh ingredients. My three year old who had already eaten dinner had three pieces of my pizza! Plus the staff was incredibly friendly. We’ll definitely be going back again.

Finally went to Manifesto tonight.

The pizza was amazing, really miles ahead of anywhere else.

Unfortunately the place was virtually deserted, its decor is stark anyway, but with nobody there it really didn’t feel very welcoming.

Since its recent launch I have been to MANIFESTO serval times already. I am a huge foodie and particularly enjoy a good pizza especially in London. I am Italian and have lived in London for 25 years so would say that this is the best in pizza I have so far experienced in the UK capital. The only place that will come close to Manifesto is Radio Alice but the concept is very different. Manifesto is such an easy and affordable concept that without doubt will attract many customers. Only 5-6 seasonal sourdough pizzas and some of the best ingredients you will find in any London pizza restaurant. I especially enjoyed “Pig & Field” as well as “Tomato & Co" The service was very friendly and accommodating, the wines organic and yummy. My kids keep asking for the delicious organic coke they serve and love to try different pizzas each time. This has quickly become a family favourite. Go try. You will not be disappointed.
