Labour MP for Battersea, Marsha de Cordova comes out in support of a People's Vote!

Postby GuyD73 » Thu Jan 17, 2019 1:20 pm

Hi all, just wanted to let you all know some news about our local MP Marsha de Cordova who, after a meeting on Monday evening with Labour colleagues, came out for the first time in support of a second referendum.

I’ve had a fairly regular dialogue with Marsha ever since she was elected, often to remind her that there are many people who aren’t Corbyn fans in the slightest, perhaps wouldn’t normally even vote Labour, but did so tactically in 2017, to achieve precisely the sort of Parliamentary impasse that might lead to a second vote. I’m delighted at this development, and thought a few of my neighbours might share this view. If so, can I suggest that it couldn’t hurt to drop Marsha a brief note of thanks for her representation - marsha.decordova.mp@parliament.uk - , particularly given that there appears to be a considerable majority among Labour voters, members and MPs for a second vote but the leadership appear to be dragging their feet in terms of honouring the promise made at their conference.

For those who may not know, that promise was that, in the event of losing a vote of no confidence, policy would be that ‘all options are on the table including a peoples vote’. I struggle to see what the other options could be, but if anyone has some ideas, I’d be interested to hear them. Likewise this article below on Marsha’s statement is a little old now (Monday PM) so if you have any more recent sources, or examples of other Labour MPs making similar assertions, please post them in the comments.

https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/ ... 2a21d6e5e9

One of the reasons for posting this is that Marsha wasn't mentioned in many of the articles I’ve read about the 71 MPs who signed a joint letter to the leadership on Tuesday this week – this may of course be corrected in due course but I thought it important that as many of her constituents as possible knew her position on this matter. I don't think the saying 'A week is a long time in politics' was ever more apposite...

Can we have another election so that w can get a conservative back as a local MP?

In my opinion, Marsha's performance has been poor. As has the Labour party's. Look at the voting track record.

If it is Labour, they will hate the EU more than the tories, reduce economic activity, be divided more than the conservatives and be Like 1973.

You don’t say how Marsha’s performance has been poor, can you be more specific? And voting on what exactly?
I’m afraid on Labour’s position on Brexit you are simply wrong. 72% of Labour members want another ref, vast majority of MPs do too. it is only the front bench who are dragging their feet and I imagine they will soon be forced to honour the commitment made at conference. I believe Dr Rosena, Lab MP for Tooting, has recently been the first MP to publicly criticise the leadership’s ambiguous stance.
Very few strong remain or People’s vote advocates want a GE as it will be the same nonsense choice of a Tory or Labour Brexit, and solves nothing.

Check all the facts, Mr 1973

And look at how Labour is split between Progress and Momentum more than Tories on the EU.

If Labour win the next General Election, will the last person to leave Britain please turn out the lights ?

I think we can agree on that, right ?

The Tories are equally split between the ERG and the sane.

There is a very clear majority in the UK who don't want the economic damage that Brexit will cause. May's deal is dead in the water, we have the choice of No Deal WTO Brexit which will cost each one of us thousands each year in lost income or a #Peoplesvote.

The Conservatives are on some kind of Kamikazi Brexit at any cost
Labour, seem to be enabling Tory Brexit in the hope that in the Economic chaos Tories get the blame and they can win
It's the Lib Dems and the Green who want to end this madness.

Be wary of tactical voting on a single issue. There is a good deal of difference between a Labour Party member and a Labour voter. If you spent more time out of London you would appreciate that neither Remain or Mr Corbyn are popular with the majority of Labour voters. If you knew more about politics you would know Mr Corbyn is not keen on the EU but is very enthusiastic regarding taxation of the inhabitants of the likes of Nappy Valley.

What is the point of voting in a second referendum if the politicians won’t enact the result of the first.

The Remainer Government along with the entire media establishment having been working flat out for the last 3 years to delay and overturn the result.

We have not had any real negotiations so far it has all been a game of charades for us plebs.

When you look at the financial backers of the so called ‘People's Vote’ you soon realise it has nothing to do with ordinary people.

Respect the first vote or democracy in this country is finished.

Ah well - Peter Hargeaves, Arron Banks, Crispin Odey, James Dyson, Jim Ratcliffe ..... When you look at the financial backers of Vote Leave you soon realise it has nothing to do with ordinary people.

@Ratski

Totally an utterly untrue.

1. The promises on Brexit made during the referendum were mostly untrue, government can't deliver them as it was never in the gift to deliver them. Boris et al knew these were lies and they are still lieing. (see Boris claiming never to have spoken about Turkey joining the EU).

The EU would never give us all the benefits of the EU, but non of the obligations. It would be the end of the EU. The EU has been consistent and offered us a better deal than Canada or Japan, but they are not giving us a Blank cheque which is what the Billionaire Brexiteers promised.

2. Total lie. Only mega rich backer has been George Soros, who has no financial gain from remain but is well known for giving money to liberal causes with no profit motive. Leave on the other hand has lots of billionaire backers, many of whom are shifting their wealth out of the UK (like Jacob Rees Mogg and the man who owns Ineos.

3. Ever poll is showing that the majority up and down the country now want to remain.
https://whatukthinks.org/eu/opinion-pol ... l-results/

Please think for yourself and check the facts of Leave. Very litte of what Leave says turns out to be true.

OK, I’ll start by dealing with the first attempt at being patronising. Sloaney donkey, I’m too polite to call your claim daft, so instead I’ll say that I think you’ll find it very hard to find any evidence for your assertions, perhaps you’d like to supply a link that’s supportive of your theory? (I won’t hold my breath 😃)Here’s some evidence to back up mine. 72% of labour members want a PV – and if you notice, it also canvasses Labour supporters.https://www.standard.co.uk/news/politic ... 28096.html  Outside the membership, the study also found backing for a second vote among Labour supporters. Some 57 per cent of current Labour voters, and 61 per cent of those who backed the party at the 2017 general election, want Mr Corbyn to "fully support" a fresh referendum.I don’t deny that the Labour party are divided or that Corbyn is a brexiteer. My feeling is that he will eventually bow under the pressure of his membership, MPs and voters to fulfil party policy as agreed democratically at conference and back a second vote. Something for Ratski to consider. You do know about the 11 ongoing criminal investigations into the conduct of both Vote Leave and Leave. EU don’t you? They are being brought by a range of institutions including the NCA and Met Police. This is after the Electoral Commission found Darren Grimes guilty, to a criminal burden of proof and fined him £20,000. The source of Arron Banks’ donations are still not clear and it’s very likely the largest donation in British political history will be proven NOT to be from a permissible donor. Just do a quick google search on the award-winning journalist Carol Cadwalladr and that’ll soon bring you up to speed. Personally, I am delighted at the work that’s being done by Dominic Grieve and Yvette Cooper to prevent this disgraceful government pushing through its insane agenda. It’s also quite amusing listening to the quitters moaning about it when they spent so long advocating for Parliamentary sovereignty – you have your wish! Worth watching the House of Commons this afternoon, I’ve a feeling there may be more good news for remainers on the way…

Ratsky "Respect the first vote or democracy in this country is finished."

Considering all the lies peddled from the leave campaign to get votes for brexit and what we know now on how the Country economy is going...I will be surprised if people would vote leave again.

Also, correct me if I am wrong. Wasn't this damned referendum only advisory and NOT binding?

The biggest lie of the referendum came from the PM of the time..

“An in or out referendum.

When the British people speak, their voice will be respected – not ignored.

If we vote to leave, then we will leave.

There will not be another renegotiation and referendum”

We then had a GE - where both Labour and Conservatives promised in their manifesto’s to deliver the result of the referendum. Over 85% of Battersea constituents voted for these two parties - the parties offering a second referendum lost their deposits.

The only people who seem to be struggling to understand what they voted for is those in Westminster who voted massively in favour of issuing Article 50 and now don’t like the default position if no deal can be agreed.

66 days of progressive liberal can kicking to go folks. Freedom, another day closer.

@Ratski

This is very disingenuous to say. If the government had been able to deliver the Brexit as promised by vote leave, then there would be no question of staying.

Because the utter failure to delivery anything which Leave promised, and the economic damage being wrought by Brexit, people are changing their minds and Remain commands a strong majority.

Here are some of Leaves worst lies

Lie 1, UK pays £350m a week to the EU.
Not even close to the true figure, Excludes the rebate and all the money spent in the UK by the EU. https://fullfact.org/europe/our-eu-memb ... 5-million/

Lie 2, UK will be financially better off out of the EU.

Reality, Growth has dropped off a cliff in the UK since the referendum. We dropped from being the fastest growing to the second slowest in the G7. This is already costing and estimated £20bn a year
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/busi ... 81841.html

Then the UK will have to duplicate 50 EU agencies such as the European Medicines Agency (which was based in London). The cost to replace and duplicate the work of the European Air Safety Agency along is estimated to be around £0.5 billion a year , 6% of what we pay to the EU on just one agency. Of course the CAA is struggling to take over so it is not beyond the realm of possibility that Airports will be shut until they are. Rolls Royce is not taking the risk and has shifted British Jobs in engine certification to Germany.

Lie 3. Deal would be easy.
Was never the case, the EU have been totally consistent. They are offering us the best deal possible but when we are no longer regulated in the EU framework we can't have the same access to the EU we did before. Cakeism was a lie and they knew it was a lie. Fox also said we would have 40 trade deals by now. Even he admits that is not the case.

Ultimately some of us want the benefits of the EU, not just the trade and economic benefits, but the freedom of movement we enjoy, the willingness of the EU to look out for it's members (just look at the EU response to the Russian Chemical Weapons attack in Salisbury), in a world which is increasingly uncertain, the clean beaches and the cautious approach to chemicals we come into contact with. These are things worth fighting for.

The choice was clear - we even had a leaflet sent to every household explaining to us what we were voting for and the potential consequences of been outside the Customs Union, Single Market and ECJ.

Nothing that was said during the referendum had any impact on my decision. I knew which way I was going to vote when I was 16 studying alevel politics and in the twenty odd years since this position has only been hardened.

Since the vote we have seen plans for an EU army come in to full force (another Clegg lie) and the only reason Turkey’s EU membership plans have been put on hold is because Erdogan’s mask has fallen and we all see him as the Islamic version of Hitler that he is.

It was never going to be easy extracting ourselves from such an organisation that over years has sucked the life out of our democracy and left us with the current crop of wets occupying Parliament.

Well Ratski, you appear to be in the minority according to the polls and I assume you believe in democracy?

What type of Brexit do you want

No Deal WTO Brexit?
May's Deal
Version of May's deal
Norway
Norway +
Norway-
Canada ++++

See it is not clear what Brexit was or is. Polls show that people are also conflicted just as Parliament is.

The referendum was a thin margin with massive criminal cheating by both Vote Leave and Leave.EU to the extent there are 11 criminal investigations into them. The Electoral Commission levied it largest ever fine. It may have not swung your vote but the lies and untruths were believed by many.

It is totally wrong to drag the UK out of the EU, cause the economic damage and job loses that will involve against the will of the majority of the UK.
