Is there a "Northcote Road" in New York?

Postby Littlebetty » Mon Jul 18, 2011 10:03 pm

Hi

Can anyone recommend where in New York is a good place to live with a 4month and a 2yr old? I have never been so don't have a clue where to start looking. Also are the nurseries as difficult to get into there as they are here?

Any advice welcome!!!

i'm sure the american mums can help out with some advice. i understand from friends who work in NY that the nursery schools in Manhattan are very difficult to get into.

I have quite a few friends in Brooklyn, which seems to be more family friendly? Also New Jersey, and commuting in.

Agree with the other posts that parts of Brooklyn are most similar to Northcote Rd.

Park Slope is the original child-friendly Brooklyn neighbourhood, Manhattan families started moving there en masse about ten years ago. Since then the family vibe has spread to nearby areas like Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, Ft Greene and Brooklyn Heights.

You will find Manhattan neighbourhoods are not as villagey as Brooklyn, but there are lots of families living in the West Village, Tribeca, Upper East and Upper West Sides.

Highly recommend Brooklyn though. Good luck and enjoy!

My dad and step-mum just spent about 3 years living in Park Slope with my little brother who is now 11 - they moved out to the suburbs about a year ago but will have lots of ideas on New York for little ones, (not just Park Slope). My step-mum is English and experienced moving there with no prior knowledge of NYC for kids so i'm sure would be very happy to help with advice if you would like. Let me know via PM if you want her email address.

Thank you for your help, it sounds like there are lots of areas for a young family.

It's always a bit stressful moving but with 2kids now it's a whole new ball game!!

Many thanks.
