Mathnasium Maths Learning Centre Open on Northcote Road

Postby Mathnasium » Thu Mar 07, 2019 1:54 pm

Hello Nappy Valley Net,

We have recently opened a Maths learning centre on Northcote Road called Mathnasium which offers individualised maths tutoring for students in years 1 to 11.  Our formula for teaching children maths, the Mathnasium Method™ has transformed the way students learn maths across 1000+ centres worldwide!  Using the Mathnasium Method we teach your children to become natural mathematical thinkers so your child can feel empowered, self-confident, and special.

Our website (www.mathnasium.co.uk/clapham) has lots of detailed information on Mathnasium, however I wanted to provide a little more insight to the Nappy Valley community by answering a few of the frequently asked questions:

Can my child really become a natural mathematical thinker?
It's commonly believed that you need to be born "a natural" to become great at maths. But at Mathnasium, we believe that virtually any child can become great at maths. For many kids, maths is something that doesn't come naturally, but they can be taught to think in the ways that the naturals do. When it comes to maths, your child can feel empowered, self-confident, and special.

We teach our students to use efficient and reliable “schema”– organized ways of thinking – that are innate to the mathematically gifted among us. Mathnasium instructors deliver excellent instruction that is driven by our top-notch curriculum materials. These materials are carefully selected for students to encounter when the appropriate prerequisite knowledge is in place. Through this process, our students develop strong mental maths and written computational skills, along with the reasoning ability to know which skills serve them best in any given situation.

When you learn to think like a natural... you can become one!

How is Mathnasium different to a tutor?
Mathnasium is structured as a learning centre rather than a tutorial service. While a tutor helps students get through “tonight’s homework,” our primary role as a learning centre is to uncover and directly address gaps in students’ knowledge that are the underlying causes of their current difficulties in school. Since maths is a cumulative subject, it is extremely important to make sure that students have mastery of prerequisite knowledge from previous Years if they are going to have success in their current Year and beyond.

Do you cater only to children that are really struggling / good at maths?
We assist children of all abilities, although we tend to have 3 types of children who attend:
Catch up:  Typically really struggling in maths and the problems are compounding, manifesting in poor results & reduced confidence against their peer group.
Keep up:  These students tend to be ‘OK’ at maths, but they are in the middle / rear of the maths group and require some extra maths help.
Get ahead:  Those students who are bored in class and are looking for a challenge or an advanced maths program.

Do students truly enjoy coming to Mathnasium?
Mathnasium students enjoy attending their sessions, and parents frequently ask us to explain what we are doing to make that happen! While there are many contributing factors, the primary reason is that Mathnasium students are significantly gaining self-confidence due to their improving math abilities. Our students often feel relieved that maths really can make sense, and they feel empowered to reach new heights that never before seemed possible.

We’ve only been open since the end of January and we’ve already made a positive impact on our existing students. I look forward to continuing to serve the community and if you have any questions please feel free to call me on 0207 0787 000.

Northcote Road is in Battersea. Not Clapham.

Maths Mag004.jpg
Interesting.  Years ago, under the Inner London Education Authority, Maths teachers across London devised an individualised Maths scheme, with each child being assessed and given appropriate work.  It was described as loonie left and dumped, along with ILEA.  Perhaps only those on a comfortable income are allowed to learn and enjoy Maths, whatever their initial level.  (I wonder where all those Maths materials written by teachers and published by ILEA are).  I am attaching an image of a "Maths Mag" which was produced by a 12/13 year old who proclaimed that he didn't like Maths because he was artistic.
