Please VOTE in the European Elections on 23rd May, and vote REMAIN!

Postby GuyD73 » Tue Apr 16, 2019 9:26 pm

Just a brief exhortation to our community to register to vote in the European Elections and to vote for REMAIN parties, namely Liberal Democrat, Change UK and Green.
UK nationals, if you aren’t already, then please register to vote here – https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
EU nationals can vote for MEPs in the UK, so please, PLEASE exercise your democratic right! You’ll need to fill in a form at https://www.yourvotematters.co.uk/ by Tuesday 6th May.
There’s much information circulating on social media about the D’Hondt method and how best to minimise the number of seats for UKIP & The Brexit Party (BP), so I won’t go into that here, but my own view is that regardless of how many seats each party wins, the number of votes for pro-Remain parties will send a strong message to both the government and the ‘opposition’ (such as it is), as to the public’s current view of Brexit. I would like to have seen much greater collaboration between the remain parties, but it seems that’s not to be and it will at least be mitigated by the far right vote being split between UKIP/BP. Delighted that the Renew party have effectively been subsumed into CHUK to maximise the impact of their supporters’ votes.
I would point out that some of the Labour MEPs such as Seb Dance, have been among the most vocal and dynamic in opposing Brexit and campaigning for a People’s vote, so I wouldn’t blame anyone for voting for candidates like him. However, in the same way that in GE2017, a vote for Labour has been misinterpreted as a vote for a Labour ‘jobs first’ Brexit, so it can also be in this context, until the Labour leadership come out unequivocally in favour of a PV, so for that reason, I can’t bring myself to vote for any Labour candidate.
I find it very difficult to believe that anyone who voted leave in 2016 still thinks it’s a great idea, now that the law-breaking, lies and disinformation of the campaign have been thoroughly exposed, but if you do and you’re tempted to vote for either of the smaller pro-Brexit parties, then I would urge you very strongly to look carefully at the kind of candidates being fielded by the BP/UKIP and ask yourself if you really share their values.
The original leader of the BP, Catherine Blaiklock has posted some utterly disgusting Islamophobic comments on social media, some of which you can find at  https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/ ... m-messages Carl Benjamin, the UKIP candidate for the south-west tweeted ‘I wouldn’t even rape you’ to MP Jess Phillips, something referred to as ‘satire’ by their leader Gerard Batten on the Marr show last weekend. And former Brexit Party treasurer Michael McGough was recently sacked after The Guardian unearthed anti-semitic, homophobic, Islamophobic and offensive racist remarks about people from “bingo bongo land” and people who had perished in the Grenfell Tower tragedy. Unbelievable.  I really hope there aren’t too many people among us who can countenance abhorrent views like this and wish to be represented by these repellent individuals, and I’m sure that vast majority of NVNers find such remarks unconscionable, so please, let’s take a stand against this horrific far right bigotry.   While I’m here, worth mentioning I have been doing some digging into Wandsworth Labour councillors’ views on Brexit. Now they would like you to think they are united in support of a Peoples Vote, because they see it as a future vote winner in our heavily remain supporting borough, but I’m afraid that simply isn’t true. There are a handful of councillors who are VERY actively campaigning for a PV (Thank you all) but sadly there are also quite a few who are either fans of Brexit (Lexit) or too in thrall to comrade Corbyn to move away from the leadership’s dishonest and ambiguous fence-straddling position. I think Wandsworth residents have every right to know which individuals are in which camps, so as soon as I have figured it out, I’ll be letting you all know in a future post.  Keep fighting the good fight remainer folk, we are WINNING!   :D

The one and same Dickyd. Talk about getting your priorities in the right order  😕

His version of "brief" cracks me up. If that's a brief post I'd hate to see a long one!

Funny how he forgets to mention the ever growing list of CUK (Change UK) party candidates that have had to stand down due to racist and sexist tweets.

They don’t sound very centrist to me more a bunch of undemocratic bigots I am surprised Guy isn’t standing for them himself. 🙂

Dickyd, yes I’m the **** that posted but it was about my in-laws and I haven’t ‘cut communications’ with them either, so TWO inaccuracies in one short sentence, another glaring example of the fact-free nature of many Brexit supporters.  I’m glad I posted about the difficulties I have with my in-laws’ attitude in support of Brexit because I received lots of kind, supportive messages from people in the exact same position, some of whom, despite being torn and emotionally scarred by it, have actually severed ties with family members who refuse to accept that Brexit will make us all poorer and reduce opportunities for our children. If there is a further public vote of any kind, in my extended family, all the siblings have agreed that we will try and act together to persuade their parents that they may well risk the relationships with their grandchildren if they vote again to remove their rights and freedoms.  I’m reminded of a story I heard on the radio recently about a grandmother who voted leave because of the £350m for the NHS, thinking she was doing her granddaughter a favour, only to be utterly distraught that said granddaughter now won’t speak to her, given it’s highly likely that the very future of the NHS is threatened by Brexit.  I feel deeply for this lady, as I do for anyone who was deceived by the outright lies of the leave campaign, and let’s remember Nigel Farage disowned the £350m claim the very next morning after the vote, disgusting! People bleat about respecting the result, no, I won’t respect the result of a vote characterised by dark money, foreign influence, proven electoral fraud and endless LIES.  Keep fighting remainers, there is everything still to fight for 💪 👊

Anyone who would "sever ties" with flesh and blood relatives, in particular, over politics is clearly very disconnected from humanity.

I actually think people like that need psychiatric help.

When we have rapes, murders, wars overseas depopulating large regions etc. how can something so trivial break up a family?
They obviously weren't really a family at all.

The only legitimate reason to cut off family is when they have personally done you wrong; be it physical or mental, AND that is a VERY difficult thing to have to do.

When I look at some of the posts which get ‘personal’ I struggle to see how any of the posts really help.

I voted remain but fully respect leave and think we should just get on with it. But a small number of people use it to spill vile and hate.

That is why we are in this mess. Partisan politics. At its worst.

However, there is a future PM out there who can reunite the country after all of this. And I sure hope they come.

Hello Sloaney Poney, you're perfectly entitled to the opinion that we ought to 'get on with it' as I am to mine that there is no mandate for Brexit or legitimacy to the vote, but you won't get any spilling of bile (I think you mean) or hate from me.

I do rather object though to Parsley Song's lame trolling of the length of my posts. I had hoped she'd moved out to the shires to be among the UKIP, Britain First, Tommy Robinson/Nigel Farage types she seems so at home with, but sadly not.

Something definitely worth mentioning about Parsley Song though is her charming view on social housing. She once tried to accuse me in a pejorative way, of 'living in a social housing development at the end of Geraldine road', as if it were a SLUR! a criticism, can you believe it? It's actually also a complete lie (standard Brexiter), I actually live in a privately owned flat in an Edwardian building, but that's irrelevant. A number of my near neighbours are social housing tenants and amazingly I don't feel the need to look down at my nose at them because of the tenure of their housing ffs. So there you are, if you live in social housing PS thinks you're somehow inferior to her and others who don't, and if you're a renter, I dread to think what lowly stratum of society PS thinks you inhabit, but safe to say she would think you a second class citizen.

Fortunately, because NVN is full of decent, tolerant, open-minded people, this repellent attitude is NOT prevalent and several people immediately called her out for the utterly disgusting and snobbish comment it was, and that ladies and gentlemen, is everything you need to know about our resident brexit cheerleader Parsley Song. Eugh.

Anyway, please VOTE REMAIN in the Euros (just two hours to register folks). Great result for the Lib dems in the locals wasn't it? They're calling it the #remainbacklash, bring it on!

I cannot understand how anyone can cut off their friends/relatives for voting remain/leave!!!!!  After all we are all entitled to our own opinions.

Just listen to LBC radio to hear those people who voted Leave even more adamant that they want to leave - OK there are people who have changed their minds, but I think many (even the majority) of the Leave voters are still convinced it's a great idea.  And many Remain voters now think Leave is a good idea.

Let people vote how they like, without threats of being cut off from family/friends - after all noone can say we have not heard all the arguments for & against this time.

@Guy673

I think you miss the point of NVN by a very wide margin. There should be no room for individuals’ use of this platform as a political soapbox. It should be used as a forum for a community to help each other out, not as a medium for people to express their political opinions through long winded and subjective rants which not everyone necessarily shares.

I would be interested to hear others’ views on this, and if indeed any action can be taken to discourage such postings.

I agree with you Blenkarne. He's not just treating NVN as his personal soapbox, he is doing the same thing on Nextdoor and Scooploop which are also local community sites and they are just the ones I know about. It's unpleasant, bullying, head-bashing, hugely irritating and his willingness to break up his family and ruin his business over an issue that he has no power over is just utterly deranged! It's time the admin shut him up/down. Annabel?

I think that this is effecting him mentally; and there is no shame in that. Mental health is important. I just think that this obsession is clear now. It does make me wonder if anyone in his personal life recognises this?

I don't think he should be 'shut up', however, perhaps he should be offered advice/support?

I'm not sure. I do find his posts borderline...

blenkarne; It is a forum and as such different topics get discussed. You can click on the post title if is something that may interest you otherwise don't bother .Would be pretty dull if all the posts on Nappyvalley were about nannys, schools, holidays and cleaners!

the parsley song ;"It's unpleasant, bullying, head-bashing, hugely irritating"   pot calling the kettle...
"It's time the admin shut him up/down"  Would be great if she did that to you!

sea hibiscus : You may mean well but your post comes across as extremely patronising.
