Aupair pay in SW London

Postby JagMum » Sat May 11, 2019 8:25 pm

Hello all,

We are getting an Aupair for the first time and would really appreciate your thoughts on what an appropriate weekly allowance is in SW London (we are more specifically in Wimbledon)?

Do you also pay for gym and oyster?

We have one 5yo son and she will be responsible for getting him breakfast / dressed for school / take him to school / pick up after school / cook dinner / do 2-3 loads of laundry a week.

No babysitting is included in her weekly allowance, that would be paid extra.
We would also pay extra for work beyond 30h/week during school holidays..

Help! I just want to make sure that we pay her fairly.

Here is the government guidelines for employing an au pair.

https://www.gov.uk/au-pairs-employment-law/au-pairs

There is no Paid holiday entitlement or sick pay requirement. If they are sick, they must be still provided with their board and lodgings obviously though.

Most au pairs have 2 nights babysitting built in to the deal - highly recommended.

They generally pay for their on gym and travel perks from the pocket money you provide. We say an average of 30 hours per week so in term time the lower hours offset the higher holiday hours.

Hi,
I think au pairs can expect about 100 to 120 a week for 25-30 hours and up to two babysitting nights. Some families pay for oyster too.
Good luck!

Thank you evainlondon - that is around what I was thinking...

The government guidelines for pay are way lower than what seems to be the going rate and I just wanted to make sure that she gets roughly what her friends in the area earn...

Hi, I’d suggest at least 100 per week and up to 150 during school holidays.

Au pairs are required to have 2 weeks holidays every 6 months. Many people don’t know that and many au pairs never get holidays or are unpaid if they take any :(

If you provide her with an Oyster card that’s an amazing perk that will make your au pair position stand out and will really help your au pair make the most out of her time in London. It’s time to explore and meet new people but travelling is expensive so often au pairs are stuck at home and get homesick faster. So if you can provide an oyster card, I would :) gym membership might not be needed. Depending who you find. I’d suggest providing english courses to your au pair!

Well, you always can be more generous...
I cant imagine my old hostfamily not paying me for sick days or holidays at all. Actually, I wouldnt have stayed with them for 2 years.
I was au pair for 2familes starting in 2013, with my first family I was getting 175£/w for 35h, private studio and extra money for food, 6 weeks of paid holidays.
With the second family I had around 8 weeks of paid holidays a year.
If you can afford to offer better conditions why not?? The au pair will feel happier and more appreciated, after all she is gonna be looking after your more precious thing in your life.
