7+ KCS exam prep

Postby Am1903 » Tue May 21, 2019 9:51 am

Hi all, could someone please guide me on how to prep my DS for the kcs 7plus exam prep. He doesn’t go to a prep school and we don’t want to tutor him. So just wanted some guidance on how could I prep him at hone. Would bond books suffice or should I be consulting other books as well. He is ok in maths but comprehension and story wiring are challenging. Would appreciate any inputs on this please.
Thank you

Dear Am1903,

Good morning.  I do hope you the best of luck with the 7 plus exam process.  We know how stressful a time it is.

If you ever change your mind on tutoring, or if you would like to have a consultation please contact us at Exceptional Academics.  We are a London based tutoring agency with ample experience and great success rate.

Aside from consultations we also have an in-house schools consultant who is a current working head teacher at an independent prep school who can also offer a mock interview as she herself has many years of experience interviewing.

My son did Dulwich College's 7+ and he also came from a state school. I find that there normally isn't a big gap between teaching in the early years of state schools and preps so he should be fine. We didn't tutor him as I don't think that is necessary. If you have to tutor a child at 6, either that child's current school is extremely poor or that child is unsuited to the rigours of the new school.
To check that my son was ready, we used the Schofield and Sims books for Maths, NVR and VR. He started with 6-7 and then he moved on to the 7-8 ones. My son is very good at maths and had a maths age of nearly 9 at the time. I also bought the Letts 7+ Creative Writing book. That was very useful for me to see where he was in terms of writing for his age. We started in October and didn't tell him how important the exams were. Well, I don't think they are that important (but that's just me) although he really wanted to move schools and Dulwich was his only choice. I believe the less stressful you make the process, the more likely he is to be successful.
