Visiting 83 year old parents 200 miles away ..........

Postby chorister » Wed Apr 08, 2020 10:39 pm

@ThelmaandLouise

There seems to be some issue with posting comments on #LockdownLiving, so let's try this.

Your husband is right.  The rules apply to you and your sister too.  If you ignore them people (may be you or your parents) might die.

Stay at home. Simple.

Which part of the governments advice are you finding difficult to understand?

I didn’t read a clause that said travel over 200 miles on Easter weekend.

My goodness, this is a tough one and the other posters are being rather harsh - but I'm afraid your husband is right.

It's so difficult with elderly parents especially in isolation. Can't you just send them food/Easter treats or ask a neighbour to help?

Just ask yourself if it is essential to go - it doesn't sound like it as you are just delivering food - so you can just call a neighbour or a local grocery store / order online to get things delivered to them. You really should not be travelling and I imagine your parents won't be expecting you to either.

Stay at home and Facetime them instead. Get your kids to draw Easter bunnies for them and try to include them in your Easter festivities virtually but don't go over there.

".... this is a tough one ....." - it's only tough if you think the rules don't apply to you.

Do you really think the exhausted, overstretched critical care nurses risking their lives for others who post tearful videos on YouTube begging people to stay at home are misinformed or exaggerating?

Errr... @chorister - there is nothing in my post that suggested that the overstretched critical care nurses are exaggerating, hence I have said that @thelmaandlouis should not go.

I just choose to sympathise with her because it is tough when you live so far away from your elderly parents who probably feel very isolated. Sorry if I offended you when I said the other posters are being rather harsh - I meant the tone taken was harsh, not the answer to her question. I 100% agree with you, that no travel means no travel and I believe I made that clear in my post. Please don't mistake sympathy for flouting the rules...

The rules 100% apply to me and everyone, but that doesn't mean that they aren't tough for everyone and as you rightly point out, it is the hardest on our amazing NHS staff and all the workers out there keeping our society going.

Stay safe and stay home...All the best to you.

@mum_1980 - fair enough, thank you, and I apologise if I've have offended you.  I am just staggered by the people who (in small numbers I admit) find reasons why it doesn't apply to them.

You and your family stay safe too.

Just stay at home. This all for the safety of your family. People make rules not just because they want to make them.

Pity you didn’t think to lockdown with them from the beginning. Which is what a friend of mind has done with her 90 year old parents. They are running her ragged but they are all safe and she is doing the caring and cleaning.
