We have heard from our school that the Wandsworth test is being delayed to November or December presumably to give the children more time to prepare given the school closures.

This mainly feels like good news except I am guessing this will mean applying for a selective entry school such as Graveney without knowing your child’s score. This seems a total gamble and probably not a good idea to waste a spot on the form if you haven’t got the slightest chance of getting offered a place.



So I’m hoping someone can help:

Wandsworth Council publishes the score for previous years entries, which was apparently 254 this year but does anyone know what sort of % score this is equivalent to?

I’m hoping a current Graveney parent can shed some light on this, or give an indication on the sorts of scores their children were getting in practice papers.

I’m also not sure how much the weighting is factored in for younger children ....?

Any help will be gratefully appreciated!

141 is the max score in each test  (100 being national average)  [font]So for Graveney the score is out of 282[/font]
254  out of 282 is just over 90%

The Wandsworth test is a standardised test so they allocate scores to fit a curve.  It looks like from published scores that the percentiles and associated scores are:

80   10%
90   25%
100 50%
110 75%
120 90%
125 95%
135 99%

To get 254 (so an average of 127 in each test) you would need to be around the top 4% or so of those taking the test.  Though as it is weighted by age you would need to do a bit better than that if you were born in the first 6 months of the school year.

Sorry a quick addition to my previous post....

...it's not as easy as Goldhawk suggests (particularly as the test is not out of 141!).  Instead your score will depend on how well you do relative to everyone else.  But from experience practice does help (unlike what the company running the test would have you believe).

The Wandsworth Test is provisionally scheduled for 3 December in Wandsworth Schools.  Scores will be sent out in Jan 2021.   So yes, you will make the decision of which schools to apply for ‘blind’ however most parents struggle to come up with 6 schools due to distance etc so whilst you might see it as wasting a space you should be ok.  (The possible exception is if you are looking at multiple grammars.) 

Allocations are done in order of preference, so there’s no point putting Graveney ‘behind’ a school you will definitely get. (I.e. if you are in a feeder school or have a sibling at a school on your list already.) You can ‘move up’ from fourth or third choice to first or second though.  

Historically, many children offered first round Graveney selective spots have taken independent school places so there can be quite a lot of movement.  Hard to know how Covid-19 will influence that if at all.. 

If your child is in a Wandsworth state school they will do a mock exam a week or so before the real thing.  This will give you a fairly good indication of your child’s prospects.

This is what the council told me

"The standardised scores take into account a pupil's age and have a mean average of 100 and a standard deviation of 15.

The minimum score possible in either part of the test is 69 and the maximum score possible is 141. The scores are not expressed as a percentage (i.e. a score out of 100), nor does any secondary school use the scores expressed as a percentage."

Thank you for the replies, which are incredibly helpful.

We will keep practicing the VR and NVR and see if my DS can get anywhere near the score required for Graveney!

Hello,
My son got 253 in the Wandsworth Test and was offered a place for Graveney this September, on offer day. Typically the required score comes down between offer day and September.
He practised a lot for the test including every day during the summer holidays.

Those of us with children not in a Wandsworth State primary considering Graveney and Burntwood, assuming we will hear soon about the Test? Apparently due to take place on 5th December but would be good to have this confirmed!
