New Facebook Group set up to Resist Wandsworth Council's Ill Thought Out Traffic Madness

Postby Denwand » Sun Aug 23, 2020 11:20 pm

More pollution, huge increase in bus/taxi/Ambulance/Police/Fire Engine journey times, gridlocked streets, isolated elderly/ill/those with mobility problems, those with young children....

Expensive cycle lanes narrowing streets that are hardly used (and never used if it rains, is windy or,presumably when it becomes icy or snowy) ...

These and more are some of the benefits of Wandsworth Councils half-cocked scheme - It's like the Extinction Rebellion loons have taken over the council traffic department...

Have your say on this Wandsworth Facebook Group;

One of my main areas of concern is Emergency Vehicles being significantly delayed in the nightmare tangled mess of traffic this scheme has produced.

Under a Freedom of Information request the head of the London Fire Brigade admitted that because the closures are an emergency Covid-19 measure the Fire Brigade didn't need to be consulted - and wasn't! 😲

Let me repeat that - The FIRE BRIGADE was not CONSULTED!

I suspect that the same is true for the Ambulance service?

Is this part of Wandsworth "encouraging" you not to have a heart attack, have a fire in your house, a stroke, a child have an accident as precious minutes will be lost in an Emergency Response!  😡

A paramedic from St George's called in to LBC radio last night to say they are being held up in all the traffic created by the new schemes, a heart attack patient could be delayed by up to 15 minutes to get back to the hospital from Clapham area.

Trouble is with the cycle wands vehicles cannot pull over like they used to, to allow the emergency services through.

The emergency services may not have been consulted which is bad enough, shocking, negligent even, (although not required it must be common sense).

But presumably TfL and Wandsworth Council have impact and risk assessments for the effects of their new schemes on the emergency services considering St George's is virtually on the A24, surely?

I wonder if WBC have considered that there are three primary schools in Tooting with special needs units attached, one being on Franciscan Rd, Smallwood Rd and Hillbrook. Most if not all the children at my son's school get bused in or use a specialist taxi service, I drive my son in and on a good day pre-covid it was an easy run but on a bad day it was awful.
We don't have the option of walking or cycling to a local school as our local schools are not set up for children with complex needs. It's too far to walk and cycling would be dangerous owing to his needs. I am flabbergasted that there has been no consultation with local schools, emergency services, businesses etc.
This is just one families experience, I'm sure there will be multiple stories that will be impacted in some way, I hope that this will add some weight to the argument against these crazy ill-thought out plans. I'm all for cycling/walking ditching the car where necessary (I'm a cyclist too), but in this case it is a necessity rather than I can't be bothered to walk.

This is the most worrying part of the LTN - Emergency Vehicles trapped in the LTN-made Gridlock.

Tooting Bec this afternoon!! The ambulance had its lights and siren on and was at a standstill for vital minutes as cars could not move due to the bollards each side. Lives are at risk - St Georges Hospital vehicles use the A24 as their main route on Emergency calls.

Notice the new bollarded cycle lane is completely empty but the traffic has no room to move out of the way!

I am seriously worried about those who may suffer a heart attack / stroke / seizure, are elderly or have young children who could suffer an accident or a myriad of threatening emergency situations in SW17/SW18 whilst the council follow these idiotic ideological traffic policies.

Lives are being put at risk by the council for the sake of an ill thought-out ideology!

I am part of the group. I have been sharing the petitions, emailing to the relevant emails (heard nothing back yet) and am writing as both a business owner of a shop on Balham High Road and as an Auntie of a shielding Nephew going through Chemotherapy who needs to be in a car to get to his appointments. My family are stuck in the middle of this madness.

Many people will know that my shop is Natural for Baby, inside the shop it's all organic and natural ethically made baby and toddler products. Of course I want people to depend on their cars less as I am all up for looking after our planet. I am walking to and from the shop each day rather than taking a train (as I did before lockdown, I haven't been on public transport since the beginning of March!). There are however times when we need to use a car or even a bus and if I had an emergency and needed an ambulance, police car or fire engine, I wouldn't want the drivers to be stuck in the middle of this. Ultimately this could result in the loss of lives as well as cutting off vulnerable and isolated residents.

As a business owner, this is of course affecting footfall in the area in a negative way, just as things were starting to go in the right direction. My shop is also a UPS Access Point and the drivers who would usually have short days in August are working the same hours they would work around Christmas time - not only do they have a lot of deliveries, but they can't get from A to B in a timely manor.

Later this evening, I am one of the business owners meeting with a local MP, I will be voicing my concerns at this meeting in the most constructive and polite way possible - after all, we're both so local, we had the same primary school teacher back in the day (different schools)!

In addition to joining us in the Facebook group, please do sign the petitions for the road closures schemes that are simply very extreme and on the whole have caused more pollution, more traffic and even the cyclists are on the whole not happy with the poles on cycle lanes and are not moving onto the side roads (one of the points of the scheme). Crime has been reported to be rising too with criminals escaping on mopeds.

Remind me... didnt the good men and ladies of Wandsworth vote in a Labour candidate in 2018? A quick glance at Lambeth next door should've served as a warning.
