NYE party in the street

Postby hyacinth » Fri Jan 01, 2021 11:51 am

Am I being very unreasonable to think that NY Eve street drinks is totally unacceptable?

I went for a walk with my partner last night and there was practically a party happening in a neighbouring street. Lots of people all gathered in the street with glasses. No social distancing and a lot of very loud talking. I would have loved to have met with friends and had a knees up.

Did I misinterpret the 'stay at hone' 'do not mix with other households' this NY Eve?? Sorry for the rant but I am still aghast.

Not wishing to challenge what you saw but was there really that many?
When we came out to clap for frontline workers over the summer a dozen people seemed like a big gathering and in the still of the night noise travels more easily.
To be honest if all anyone did was wish neighbours a better year outside in the freezing cold then I think good for them.

Another click bait story that probably never happened.

This is Wandsworth probably the most insular borough in London. Neighbours don’t even talk to one another, most are at war.

If this is really the worst thing happening in your life, consider yourself lucky.
The bosom hoisting and faux outrage has worn so incredibly thin now, I think the vast majority of us were hoping people would start 2021 with a bit of perspective

Might have seemed more alarming than it was, hard to tell without being there. That said, the amount of people ignoring social distancing drinking outside the bars doing takeaway is high round here.
We’ve noticed, on our walks, that it’s the mostly the younger people who are ignoring distancing, whilst people over 50 seem to be pretty careful.
We attempted a walk over the common at the weekend but ended up walking pavements instead as the common paths were so crowded with young families. Hardly surprising in Nappy Valley I guess.
I am looking forward to moving out of London to somewhere less crowded after after 30+ years.

Our road had early evening socially distanced NYE drinks - everyone bought their own glasses and drinks and kept their distance, with constant reminders if anyone got too close. It was a real boost for their spirits and in my opinion (and I take the rules very seriously) very safe.

Thank you to those who replied kindly and constructively.

I totally agree that New Years Eve drinks and good wishes would have been uplifting. I guess I was taken aback at what I perceived to be large numbers. Maybe there was more social distancing than I gave credit.

Most importantly stay safe everyone.

It’s time we all concentrated on what’s right for ourselves and not try and police others.

Actually what's much more important, especially in these circumstances, is never to lose sight of what's right for others.

If we don't social distance many people's time will be shorter. Enough with the selfishness you fool

Please can I ask that people stay on the right side of polite when contributing to a conversation.

I appreciate that these are testing times but NappyValleyNet has always been a place that users can come to ask their questions and offer their replies without fear of being called out unkindly.

Many thanks

A x

Completely agree Annabel. I find it heartbreaking that now no one can say anything against current measures without being called upsetting names. If you are against school closures you are disregarding teacher's safety. If you are against lockdown you are a fool or have blood in your hands.

There is a need to protect the vulnerable but also people's experiences of lockdowns are completely different and need to be taken into account. Those struggling mentally, those who have no money to pay for the next supermarket run - their fears and frustrations are valid and they have the right to express their views safely if they believe measures have gone too far. There is another hidden pandemic of poverty and loneliness taking place that does not find the same spotlight.

I am extremely lucky I have all I need to endure these months of hardship in safety and comfort but that does not apply to all. And their cry and disagreement remains valid.

I hear what you're saying but looking at America right now it doesn't bode well for all of us in democracies well when we allow lies to spread because of freedom of speech.
I hate the school closures too and can see the damage in my household so can only imagine what it is like for those deprived- in fact seen the devastating effect among families I know including a mother who took her own life in the first lockdown. We wouldn't be in this mess if it wasn't for the appalling incompetence of the government when the pandemic hit.
The only thing people must do now is be responsible and educate those that still treat the virus as a hoax.
