My husband and I recently had our Wills drawn up by Ana de la Quintana who I heard about on this site. She lives locally so came to our house to take all of the details and go through all our options, and came back for us to sign the documents. She is LOVELY and I'd highly recommend using her. Her number is 020 8446 3231.

Any advice on how to write a will?

Postby Mimi54 » Thu Sep 08, 2011 12:14 pm

Hi there,

One question for you girls... I'd like to write a will but I'm not sure how to deal with it. I know that you can do it yourself but I wonder if it wouldn't be safer for me to go and see a solicitor because I'm French and not married, which makes everything a bit more complicated I suppose.

But then how can I be sure that I choose the right solicitor? Any recommendation from you? Any idea of how much I should pay for it?

Many thanks in advance!

Mimi

Hi

My husband and I recently had ours done through a company called Exclusively Wills - as the name suggested they just do Wills so if you are looking for a solicitor that can deal with other things, they aren't for you. However, they can store your Will if that's a facility you are looking for. We thought they were totally fine - an advisor came to our house for an hour to talk things through with us. The were very flexible about the appointment time - it could be done at the weekend or in the evening post bubster bedtime. The charge for a mirror/matching Wills was £138 (£115 + VAT). I found out about them via a flyer I had with an NCT magazine, and I think this rate was supposed to be a special NCT one. Having said this, they never asked for any proof that I actually was a member so I think the offer is open to all! One thing to mention is that I had to pay the fee at the end of the appointment with the advisor which I was a little surprised about (he has a little credit card machine so you don't need to have cash!) http://www.ewltd.com

Another interesting option that I have recently heard about is Will Aid. It is a partnership between the legal profession and a bunch of well known UK charities (like NSPCC, Save the Children, ageUK). Every November participating solicitors waive their fee for writing a basic Will and ask that you make a donation to Will Aid - suggested minimum donation for a mirror/matching Will is £125. http://www.willaid.co.uk

I used Charles Gibson at Gibson Forge http://www.gibsonforge.co.uk/ a few years ago and I think it was a little under a hundred pounds although perhaps more now. I made a few amendments recently and I was charged £36.

We had one phone call and the rest was done by email then the Wills were posted out to us. All very easy.

Hi Mimi. I am a local mum and work in a Brixton solicitors firm (with an office in Victoria) called Ziadies. My area of expertise is Wills & Probate and have drafted Wills for a few Nappy Valley users!

I would urge you to to get your Will done at a solicitor's firm and not by a non-regulated Will writer, especially as you are likely to need advice on domicile issues, being French born.

If you would like advice, please feel free to contact me. My email address is louisa@ziadies.co.uk and my private one is stephenandlouisa@googlemail.com (as I work part time). You can look up my firm: http://www.ziadies.co.uk.

I wish you all the best.

With kind regards,
Louisa
