Residents' anger at 'serious problem of human excrement' on Tooting Common

Postby Community Editor » Fri Apr 23, 2021 10:34 am

A group of Tooting residents is concerned at the amount of 'human excrement' being found on the common.

Friends of Tooting Common (FOTC) is a group of local residents who aim to promote the public use and enjoyment of Tooting Common and have sent a letter to Wandsworth Council complaining about the problem.

The FOTC letter to the council reads: "There is an increasingly serious problem of human excrement being found on the Common, particularly in wooded areas.

"We are not at all clear why Portaloos are not being provided, since they are being provided on Wandsworth Common and Battersea Park.

"We do therefore ask for temporary provision of Portaloos on Tooting Common, to avoid unsanitary and inappropriate use of bushes and wooded areas, and so that the Common is of course treated on the same basis as the other large greenspaces in the borough."

This comes after the warmer weather and easing of lockdown restrictions has meant people are spending extended periods of time outdoors.

FOTC goes on to urge Wandsworth Council to provide 'clear signage' to point people to available toilets.

Local Resident Jasmine Dahl, 45, said she agrees with FOTC’s endeavours. She said: “There’s nothing worse than seeing humans' bodily functions.

“Without Portaloos there can be long stretches where there are no loos at all and people are funny about using toilets in shops even more because of the pandemic.”

A spokesperson for Wandsworth Council said: “There is no excuse whatsoever for people to treat the common in this way.

"There are toilets at the café and we are assessing ways in which we can increase provision on the common including the use of temporary Portaloos. ”

Good news that Portaloos are now in place near the changing rooms next to Tooting Bec Road. Thank you to Tom Mytton for alerting me - and thanks to the Friends and MAC.
