Would love some help regarding travel.

My son is going to Greece with his friend's family in a week.

Given the impending announcement we are now thinking of booking a family holiday abroad. Can we book to fly after his test to release test has returned -  I'm guessing 7 days after he returns or do we need to wait until he has his 8 day test back, so 10 days, I've heard that they don't always come back on day 9? I'm sure that I have read that you can break quarantine but tbh I am very sceptical as to how this works in practice?

Would love some insight from anyone with either experience of doing this or travel industry knowledge.

Your son can leave the UK before his quarantine period ends

Quarantine and testing if you've been in an amber list country - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
 If you’re travelling to England for less than 10 daysIf you’re travelling to England for less than 10 days, you will need to quarantine for the whole of your stay.You must still book your day 2 and day 8 travel tests, even if you will no longer be in England on the dates of the tests.You only need to take the tests if you’re still in the country on those dates.

so, my small brain is computing that as long as we have the tests booked for day 2 and 8 everything is ok,  he can go again before he takes the day 8 or the day 8 test is back

One more thing if you don't mind :shock: 

does that mean he can test to release on day 5 get the result back the same day or day 6 and not be quarantining for a day or two before we leave the country on say day 7 as long as we have the day 8 test booked? 

obviously he has to do fit to fly test all over again as well

I’m pretty sure you are allowed to travel to another country whilst in the quarantine period. As long as the country you’re going to allows it.
Also day 5 testing. You are allowed to leave the house to go to a clinic to have a test for same day results. We went to Greece recently and went for a test on day 5 at the London General practice on wigmore street and had the results that evening. There’s another place in Queen Anne street that does same days results too
Obviously if you do a postal day 5 you can’t get your results til day 7.
