Travelling now, would you do it?

Postby teaandcake » Thu Jul 15, 2021 10:20 am

Having the debate that I am sure many families are having just now about holidays. My husband is not in favour. Thinks it is all too stressful and not at all safe. I would like to push ahead and get away. Is he right and I am being a bit blind about the risks? I would love to know what people are thinking re holidays at the moment.
I would also love a recommendation for a good insurance company that will protect from pre departure to return? Sorry for all the questions, many thanks.

I'm with your husband. I think that it is quite a hassle and anything can change at any time. Could you do something in this country or leave the holiday until later in the year?

I am with your husband and rubyonrails with this. Don't see why people are so desperate to go abroad (unless seeing family etc) and endure covid testing hassle and cost, queues, mask wearing on a plane, uncertainty re quarantine etc. If you have kids, do they really mind where they go on holiday?  For this year, as suggested by Mark Drakeford, first minister of Wales, stay in the UK and enjoy the freedom and what it has to offer.

Just seen this on the Daily Mail. We are also confused about to do and the below doesn't help ease my mind.

On the other hand, travelling is really quite easy at the moment because there are less people doing it.

I travelled to France to finally see my family after 18 months for a weekend 10 days ago and it was a great experience. It's a faff to do all the testing and paperwork beforehand but once you figure this out, the rest is a breeze.  Travel to the airport is great as there was nobody in the Stansted or Heathrow express, Stansted airport was an oasis of calm (never happens in regular times) and even he Ryanair staff was relaxed!  Border and security control people were also really patient and friendly.

In terms of safety, it depends where you intend going but many countries have way less cases than the UK.

But yes, you have to be prepared to face uncertainty.

That being said, if you have a holiday booked in the UK and it means your husband is more relaxed, then maybe it's worth staying here this year.

I think it really depends on you personal circumstances. It is probably better to travel to a green country then amber, not too far from home so that you can easily catch a different route home if needed. There is also a chance you could test positive for Covid-19 so make sure you plan ahead for that too.

We've booked to go away for personal reasons. Although, I’ve been desperate for a good break, sunny weather and in general I’ve felt like my kids have been missing out on beach life but now that I’m facing this imminent flight I’m concerned about all the difficulties we may face.. and that’s just to get there! I hope the situation doesn’t deteriorate in the next few weeks.

I agree with both you and your husband. I’m
desperate for a holiday but when I stop and think about where to go (not many options) and the hassle factor, I just end up going round in circles. That said when I see the lovely pictures my friends re posting on social media I start feeling it’s probably worth it. Covid is doing the rounds like wildfire at the moment though so make sure you avoid contact with as many people as possible before you go - you don’t want to book something and then find you can’t go because of a positive test.

A bit late but things are just getting worse. I hope you didn't and still don't have any plans on traveling.

We hear news every day about people getting stranded somewhere or being asked to pay a pretty penny for their tests on departure and delivery. Not to mention getting the damn bug itself on vacation and spreading it.

I want to travel too but lately, I've been traveling through foods. Right now I'm going to Portugal through a local tea

Oh I disagree! I have been to Cyprus, Greece, Jamaica and the Maldives since the pandemic hit and yes it’s absolutely been stressful (mainly due to the requirements for PCR to go) but absolutely been worth it when I got there. Unfortunately this is not going away anytime soon so we have to start getting on with things and you can travel, you just need to test, same way you have to test to do other things. Insurance covered us if we tested positive either before so not able to travel or out there if we go stuck and any package you are covered under package protection, nearly all flights can be changed and most hotels now offer flexible rates. Some companies even offer quarantine protection such as Flight Centre so if the country changes colour meaning quarantine they will refund you. So yes you do have to hold your nerve but most holidays do go ahead. I’d obviously avoid lots of places - anywhere Africa right now and a lot Asia due to risks of quarantine either there or here. It’s easy to navigate once you get your head round it and actually less stressful than you think once you do it. Hope that helps!

I'm writing from South Africa, where I'm "stuck" visiting my elderly parents. My story may help you decide whether to risk it or not  .. of course depending where you are travelling AND whether this Government is going to panic again without considering the science etc.
  1. If I want to return on my original scheduled date, there's no guarantee I will be able to as the quarantine hotels are full in the UK - loads of people are stuck in the airport in Johannesburg as a result. (So ...extra costs for scarce hotel places)
  2. If I'm forced to extend my stay my travel insurance company won't extend my insurance, I found out a few days ago :(
  3. As and when I CAN get a place to quarantine, it's going to cost me a small fortune (around £2500 for the hotel & 2 PCR tests for one person) for a 2 or 3-star dive near Heathrow.
  4. Heaven knows how this will affect my work...
When I booked my flight & flew out, things were looking rosy & it didn't even seem possible this could happen. My stress levels are high - even though there appears to be very little I can do about any of this.
So if you do go away outside the UK, be careful it's not to somewhere where such things could happen to you too :(

So sorry to read about all  the stress you're going through.  Just this afternoon, there are leaks in the press that the red list may go so hopefully that will happen in time for your return

Yes it is now easier to travel abroad, most countries require a PCR test of less than 72 hours and at least two vaccine injections to avoid quarantine ;) Blog sexe amateur et sexy de Airsexe
