Your wife is completely right - unvaccinated friends pose no risk to you. The “effectiveness” assessment for the vaccines was based on reducing hospitalisation, not stopping transmission. So the vaccinated can catch and spread the virus in the same was as those not. The vaccine is to protect you not anybody else. As someone else pointed out the vaccines are not without risk (something that has been kept quiet). In your age bracket the risk of death from Covid is extremely low. I would advise you to look up proper ONS data (from source - not from anybody else) on deaths and yellow card data recording vaccine adverse reactions. Enjoy the party.

The ‘lots of those in hospital with Covid have been double jabbed’ worried me until it was pointed out that if 100% of the population was double-jabbed, ALL Covid hospital cases would be double-jabbed, since the vaccines are not 100% effective.

That’s a screenshot from a pseudoscientific conspiracy website with questions over its true provenance and funding:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_Policy_Research

This is not a reputable site - it claims that masks are not only ineffective, but can increase the risk of COVID. This has been debunked.

Some people can’t get the vaccine for medical reasons. That’s why it is important that others do, so that those people are protected.

Vaccines are not just about protecting ourselves, they are about providing protection on a societal level - they slow the spread of the virus, the slow the risk of mutation the greater the number of people who are vaccinated, and on average they reduced the severity of symptoms for those who still catch a current strain of COVID even if fully vaccinated.

There is a lot of vaccine misinformation swimming around and it’s easy to get sucked in.

As one epidemiologist recently put it, by mixing large numbers of vaccinated people without any care or caution with unvaccinated people, we are creating a perfect test ground for vaccine mutation.

Largely agree with people like Jones1968. I have a similar dilemma in that both of my parents are unvaccinated because they bought into some propaganda that I can't shake from them. I'm having an engagement party in a few months and I don't know whether to tell them they can't come or not. Not because of the covid transmission risk, that's been well explored here so far, but because ultimately do I want to be the person who puts them in a room of 100 people, potentially cause them to get infected and to then get severely ill because of their lack of vaccine?

In your situation I'd say, depending upon the ages/risk group of your friends, it's either their risk to take and you absolve yourself from responsibility if they catch it at your event or you tell them that they can't come because you don't want to be the cause of their catching covid despite precautions like pre-event lat. flows and the hospitalisation/potential death that would follow.

It's a kind of selfish point, but I'd hate to think an event I ran was how someone got infected and ultimately died. It'd be a lifelong regret.

I’m not vaccinated but have lied and told my friends I am for fear of judgment - and reading posts like this I am glad I did!

…proving the point as to why proof of vaccination is likely to be required for travel and certain jobs - There will always be liars who are happy to put others at risk but don’t want to bear the responsibility of their choices.

Don’t worry some of us don’t judge others. The majority of people I know are unjabbed also due to a friend of theirs having a severe reaction and now is unable to walk without a zimmer frame. She is in her early 30s. If your friends judge you, may be worth getting some new friends 😉

Rubbish. You claim to have been vacccinated yourself, then started easing in to the anti-vax theme by claiming your father in law now has vaccine induced vertigo, and your nanny is fearful for her pregnancy. You then post a screenshot from a very questionably funded and pseudoscience site that makes a number of assertions that aren’t backed by the scientific community and which has been linked to scare stories. Finally you say that actually the majority of your friends haven’t been vaccinated and you actually know someone in their 30s crippled by the vaccine (that would have been the first thing you would have mentioned in your first post, you’d have thought). All anecdotal, all complete rubbish, all designed to undermine people’s confidence in vaccination, just like the cranks who railed against MMR.

All from an account that registered first thing this morning just to post increasingly anti-vax misinfo on this thread, and to encourage people not to get jabbed and to lie about it. Not at all suspect.

This post is utter madness and full of incorrect information or bullying opinions, any covid related posts on this forum really need to be modified.

It is no one else's business as to whether an individual has had a vaccine or not, it is private medical information you do not have to disclose, legally in this country we do not have to share medical information. Again the vaccine is a personal choice it is not a mandate or legal requirement to have it, so as an individual you have no right to ask someone to prove if they have had the vaccine and they do not have to tell you. Whether morally having the vaccine is the right thing to do or not, you are not the dictator of what other people decide to do with their bodies.

If the OP is choosing to have a party, we are still in the middle of a pandemic so there will be risk regardless if people are once, twice, or not jabbed, the attendees will all be aware of the risks so if they attend and then get covid, that's a fact of life right now.

Probably the best thing would be to ask everyone to take a lateral flow test before the party as a bit of protection, that way you are not discriminating, villifying or persecuting your friends for a choice they are free to make.

Put others at risk?! If you’re vaccinated and holier than thou, then no risk to you surely, don’t understand the issue. Those who are high risk have had the chance to be double jabbed by now, anyone else who wants the vaccine has also had the chance, those who haven’t have either chosen not to or are young (and very few medical exceptions) the young have a 0.001% chance of ending up in hospital or of anything other than a mild illness happening and those who choose not to vaccinate themselves have made a choice about their bodies and live with the consequences. Or not, given that at my age (37) there is a tiny tiny chance of any serious consequence. I did my part for society and protecting the old by observing lockdowns and following the rules on masks etc to allow those old and vulnerable the chance to get protections by vaccines. Now they’ve had that ability, I’m not putting something in my body that I don’t need, the vaccine was never meant for my age group. Those who have had it great, your choice, but I don’t feel bad at all for my choice not to vaccinate myself

Which shows that you don’t understand how vaccines work. Your ability to carry and transmit COVID is greater. Vaccination programmes also reduce the potential mutation of viruses like COVID into more virulent forms.

And, even though I wouldn’t agree with your reasoning or decision not to vaccinate, that’s just my opinion - I completely support your right not to choose to vaccinate. It’s your body and no-one should force you to vaccinate.

What seems morally questionable on your part is you lying to your friends about it out of fear they may not approve - you want to have your cake and eat it, and in so doing you’ve taken away their choice to make their own decisions about their bodies. Both cowardly and hypocritical. Some may not care you’ve vaccinated, some may be apprehensive and want to take some precautions, some may need to distance themselves from you or take additional precautions if they have vulnerable people in their lives. But you’ve deprived them of that choice to suit yourself. I wouldn’t treat any of my friends with that level of contempt.

@hal not that it’s any of your business I have been double jabbed but wish I didn’t bother because I caught covid after being double jabbed. I then travelled to France and now thanks to new changes I still have to isolate when home. No different to the unvaxxed. I also wouldn’t call anybody an anti vaxxer when it just comes to the covid vax, especially if I and my children have had all vaccinations up to date throughout our lives. This jab is completely different and still in experimental stage and we all know it. I have been a member on here for many years but don’t tend to post mainly because of people with too many opinions & people that think they are always right 👀 but when I tried to log in today I couldn’t. Also forgotten username and password options still couldn’t log me in so I decided was quicker to just make a new log in.

I am personally double vaxxed, but as a medical researcher I can tell you that statistically speaking, there’s no significant conclusion about vaccine effectiveness that can made at this point. So to those of you judging the anti-vaxers: please stop propagating based on what your own beliefs and the media is telling you. Herd immunity is helpful, but at this point, you simply can’t say that others are being “irresponsible” or “stupid” for choosing not to be vaccinated. There are many people double vaxxed still catching co-vid and there are VERY good reasons why people dont want to be vaxxed- namely, that they haven’t been used long enough to show long term effects. You can’t possibly think that it’s ok to judge others based on that! In fact, most anti-vaxxers are far more researched than the jabbers. The best we know right now is: It PROBABLY helps symptoms but PROBABLY doesn’t stop the spread.

To the poster: It sounds to me like you’re really worried about Covid but also really want your party. I don’t blame you for wanting your cake and eating it too (literally! 😂) but it makes FAR more evidence-based sense to ask EVERYONE to do a lat flow test on the day. I can’t imagine that ANYONE jabbed or not would be upset about that. I do however, think it would be annoying, as a guest, if I was expected to procure my own test. Therefore, If I was you, I would be a gracious host and also pay for everyone’s test. Let’s be honest - you’re going to spend a lot on other elements of the party. If you want your party and the peace of mind too, you should be considerate and make it easy for everyone to accommodate that for you.
