Private school bursary

Postby Lepenyea » Mon Jan 17, 2022 8:16 am

I’m looking for advice from parents whose children was accepted on full bursary into a private primary school.

My son is in Year2 in a state school and writing an entry exam in the near future to a private school. How do you find the bursary system? Do you ever feel anxious about finances? No question that our financial situation is bad enough to be able to apply for bursary if he gets a place offered. Does he have less chance though for a place because of the financial help we need from the school?

I believe (and i could be completely wrong) that bursary are offered more at secondary schools than primaries.  Whitgift and Trinity have a particularly amazing bursary programme and that would definitely be my starting point.  I think at Whigift 40% of pupils are on financial assistance so you definitely don't have less chance of a place.  Both W and T have a small entry point at Year 6 and then a bigger entry at Year 7.  Of the local primary schools in SW i am only aware of Hornsby offering bursaries.  This is because Hornsby is a Trust whilst a lot of the other primary schools are "businesses" (some of them owned by Private Equity firms !)

Wish you best of luck!

Morning Lepenyea,

Eaton House Schools offers 100% bursaries at 7+. It's a new scheme launched this year. Three parents and the the school came together during the pandemic to set up a charity 'the Eaton House Foundation' which offers 100% bursaries to Eaton House to local children for whom private school fees are completely out of reach.

Anyone who lives within 10 miles of the school, and meets the financial criteria is eligible to apply. If the financial criteria are passed the child will be invited for assessment. Assessment is in year 2, and the child joins the school in year 3, at the start of key stage two. The fact that a child has the bursary will be anonymous.

There are three bursaries available every year from September 2022: one for a boy into the Eaton House the Manor Boys School (Clapham) , one for a Girl in to the Eaton House the Manor Girls School (Clapham) and one for a boy into Eaton House Belgravia. All Bursaries are 100% of fees. There could be additional help for uniform and school clubs too.

This is the first year of the scheme, it is currently accepting applicants in Year 2 at State Schools. Deadlines have been extended due to COVID, so ignore dates on the website.

It's a wonderful school - my kids are very happy there, I'm one of the Founding Trustees of the charity.

I'm not a user on NappyValley, this is a guest post but please type 'Eaton House Foundation' into your search engine and go to the website. If you have questions please contact Eaton House Head of Admissions, Sam Feilding.

Really good luck with your journey.
