A 10-year-old girl has died after she suffered a heart attack at a south west London leisure centre yesterday afternoon (April 19). The schoolgirl went into a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital. Police and ambulance crews were called to Putney Leisure centre on Dryburgh Road at 2.46pm.
Enquiries are still ongoing and the child's next of kin has been informed. Whilst police carry out their investigation there is a crime scene in place. The Putney leisure centre has now re-opened. Police are treating her death as 'unexplained' and are trying to work out the circumstances behind the tragic situation.
A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police said: "Officers were called at 14:46hrs on Tuesday, 19 April to Putney Leisure Centre, Dryburgh Road, SW15. A ten-year-old girl was reported to be in cardiac arrest. Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and administered emergency first aid. The child was taken to hospital where she sadly died a short while later. Next of kin are being informed. The death is being treated as unexplained. A forensic scene is in place."
A spokesperson from the leisure centre said: "Unfortunately at the leisure centre yesterday a girl became unwell. She was taken to hospital and we later found out she died. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time"
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 2.38pm today (19 April) to reports of an incident at Putney Leisure Centre. We sent a number of resources including an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic, two medics in fast response cars and an incident response officer. We treated a patient at the scene and took them as a priority to hospital."
